Japanese voters, more capable than ever before of influencing domestic & foreign policies, favor continuation of their post-treaty US alliance rather than adoption of neutralism as advocated by the domestic opposition parties. Various opinion surveys conducted by the writer & Japanese agencies between 1950 & 1958 reveal almost no support for a pro-Communist policy, partly because of bad images of the USSR. Objections to US `selfishness' & 'security-mindedness' (related to military bases, nuclear tests, & other issues) limit pro-Americanism to a minimal degree. Voters for the 2 major parties generally support their leaders' conflicting views, but with signif deviations among some partisan sub-groups, & neither Liberal-Democrats nor Socialists want an extremist pro- or anti-US policy.
