e-Solidarity and Exchange: The Role of Social Media in Public Mexican Response to Hurricane Patricia in 2015
In: International journal of public administration in the digital age: IJPADA, Band 4, Heft 3, S. 1-10
ISSN: 2334-4539
Between October 24 and 25 in 2015, Mexico faced the strongest hurricane ever registered in the Western Hemisphere, which reached a record of 200 mph (325 km/h) of maximum sustained winds. In spite of pessimist predictions about the final outcome of this natural disaster, at the end, it degraded itself into a tropical storm when landing in the Mexican state of Jalisco. The present research stands in a data collecting process from social media during two moments: a) throughout the happening and b) after the incident. It collected not only information and comments generated in federal and local governmental public profiles but in civil organizations and private user profiles as well. This paper describes how social media helped not only to socialize public information in order to prevent danger but it also served as a link between governmental dependencies and civil society to support affected communities after the event.
Más abajo de la piel as a Response to Racism ; Más abajo de la piel como contestación al racismo
The ethno-cultural poetics of Más abajo de la piel, by Abel Pacheco, is analyzed in order to emphasize the shift from a "negrista" view toward that of negritude. The stories in this collection point to political, economic and cultural causes of racism against blacks, Chinese and indigenous. Discourse procedures are made explicit where racism materializes, and the social and ideological implications derived from this exploration of the issue regarding blacks are discussed. Pacheco's poetics is exemplified by a brief analysis of four stories: "Juan Chac," "Fichas," "Vocación" and "Congolí."

Is Faith an Emotion?: Faith as a Meaning-Making Affective Process: An Example From Breast Cancer Patients
In: American behavioral scientist: ABS, Band 45, Heft 12, S. 1839-1853
ISSN: 1552-3381
To understand the meaning of religious faith within the context of theobiology, this study reports on the findings of a study of breast cancer (BC) patients and how they defined faith with emotion words and reported via open-ended short narratives how religious faith helped them in coping with their BC. When defining faith, BC patients preferred positive emotion words (82.9%) over negative emotion words (17%). Still, the fact that negative emotion words were used at all indicates the need to understand religious faith as a construct that encompasses negative as well as positive emotions. BC patients confirmed the historical views of Thomas Aquinas on the role of emotions in religious faith.
Ethnocritical Reading as an Interdisciplinary and Intersectional Analytical Tool ; Lectura etnocrítica como herramienta analítica interdisciplinaria e interseccional
The main theoretical and methodological assumptions of ethnocriticism are presented as an analytical tool of an interdisciplinary and intersectional nature that conceives the text as an ethnotext and culture as an ethnoculture. This ethnotext condenses meaning, knowledge, and the crossover of approaches that leads to the materialization of different points of view and discriminatory ideologies. The one who anchors these ideologies in the text is its author, as it is the result of his imaginary. Aware or not, the author screens, in his esthetic work, representations contradicting his ethical, political, and ideological proposal. Ethnocriticism detects, analyzes and denounces those ideological biases.

Nationalism, xenophobia and sexism: the case of the Nicaraguan National Anthem in costarrican schools ; Nacionalismo, xenofobia y sexismo: el caso del himno nacional nicaragüense en escuelas costarricenses
Received: 21-03-2019Approved:07-15-2019 This article analyzes the nationalist, xenophobic, and sexist discourse utilized in social media comments and in reactions to online news about the suggestion of closing the Patriotic Month by singing Nicaragua´s national anthem in some San José schools with a high percentage of Nicaraguan students. Xenophobia against Nicaraguans and sexism against the ministry of education are reflected on the rhetoric of a nationalist discourse against such announcement. Comments emphasize stereotypes of Nicaraguans as violent, illegal, dangerous, threatening, and opportunistic while the ones against the minister take the form of insults on her moral, intelligence, gender, and political knowledge. These discursive practices also evidence the persistence of other domination systems such as racism, classism, and homophobia, which are reflected daily in social media.
