A team from the Soc SC Res Center of the U of Puerto Rico (PR) spent several days observing & interviewing members of a crowd of 100,000-150,000 persons who had assembled at Sabana Grande in PR to await the reappearance of a Virgin Saint at 11:00 AM, May 25, 1953. Poverty, lack of educ, & widespread illness among the pop are among the conditions which predisposed so many PR'ans to believe in & act upon such a miraculous occurrence, in spite of the fact that the Roman Cath Church did not recognize it. The events served a number of functions for the persons & org's involved - attention & prestige for those directly concerned, econ benefit to the district, etc. 2 other findings were: (1) the miracle & corollary events were separated from most aspects of the concrete day-by-day life (econ, pol'al, educ'al, etc) of the participants, & (2) a decided intertwining between a rather vague religious ideology & a deeply felt personal problem, illness, or infirmity. It is hypo'ed that illness tends to stir the religious ideology into a more active role. K. Geiger.

If minimum changes were made in SES levels, education, Ru-Ur pop balance, which changes are expected to produce lower fertility rates? An area probability sample of 5,500 households was reduced to 471 by using heads of households that were: Ru (N = 278), Ur (N = 104), and Ru residing in cities (N = 89), and also (1) married only once, (2) for at least 9 years, (3) married between 19-29 years of age, (4) reporting their ages between 27-49. 10 variables were studied with a modified factorial design using Keyfitz's t-test. It was found that: (1) education is dominant, higher education results in lower fertility; (2) younger adults show lower fertility behavior; (3) migrants to the city show fertility behavior of Ur adults; (4) migrants to the city approve family limitations more than do either pure Ru or Ur types; & (5) older adults accept contraception more than younger.
