Subsidiaries of the two top business groups or chaebol - the Samsung and the Lucky-Goldstar groups - control around 45 per cent of South Korea's electronics and telecommunications industry production. They would appear to be among the most effective global competitors. They entered the electronics industry at an early stage and developed in parallel. The author examines the reasons why they took these decisions from the perspective of the main elements of global competitiveness outlined by Alfred Chandler in his analysis of the creation and development of the managerial business enterprise in the USA, the UK and Germany.
