In Teilen der israelischen Gesellschaft, vorwiegend unter den gut ausgebildeten Angehörigen der oberen Mittelschicht im Alter zwischen 20 und 50 Jahren, breitet sich ein quasi-religiöses Verhältnis zur Demokratie aus ("democratic faith"). Diese neue "Religion" äußert sich im ritualisierten Bekenntnis zu Individualität und Universalität, wenn es um Fragen des öffentlichen und privaten Lebens geht, wie Bürgerrechte, Geschlechterbeziehungen, Rock- und Pop-Musik, Eltern-Kind-Verhältnis, Karriere, Kunst, Ausbildung und Wissenschaft.
