Theory-based evaluation has undergone changes over time, adapting to challenges and aligning with trends that emphasise increased participation and complexity. However, integrating both high participation and complexity in programme theory does not consistently led to productive outcomes in intricate systems. This article introduces contingency-oriented questions to assess the appropriate balance of complexity and participation in theory-based evaluation. Using a case study focused on the Accelerating Achievement for Adolescents Hub, a Global Challenges Research Fund initiative, we demonstrate the practical application of these questions. Our analysis highlights why efforts to elaborate a more complex programme theory were unsuccessful and explains the rationale behind concluding the project with a theory characterised by more moderate complexity and participation.

A long-standing question in the organizations literature is whether firms are better off by using simple or complex representations of their task environment. We address this question by developing a formal model of how firm performance depends on the process by which firms learn and use representations. Building on ideas from cognitive science, our model conceptualizes this process in terms of how firms construct a representation of the environment and then use that representation when making decisions. Our model identifies the optimal level of representational complexity as a function of (a) the environment's complexity and uncertainty and (b) the firm's experience and knowledge about the environment's deep structure. We use this model to delineate the conditions under which firms should use simple versus complex representations; in doing so, we provide a coherent framework that integrates previous conflicting results on which type of representation leaves firms better off. Among other results, we show that the optimal representational complexity generally depends more on the firm's knowledge about the environment than it does on the environment's actual complexity. We also show that the relative advantage of heuristics vis-à-vis more complex representations critically depends on an unstated assumption of "informedness": that managers can know what are the most relevant variables to pay attention to. We show that when this assumption does not hold, complex representations are usually better than simpler ones.

In this paper a brief review of the major contingency leadership theories is made. A study testing Fiedler's contingency model of leadership effectiveness is also reported here. It is suggested that longitudinal study of the leadership process encompassing the leader, his subordinates, and the situation needs to be made; the exact nature of the contingency relationship also needs to be examined systematically.

Die Diskussionen um das wissenschaftliche und theoretische Selbstverständnis der Sozialpädagogik erwecken aktuell den Anschein, die Sozialpädagogik unterläge einem Theorie-Dilemma.Ziel des Bandes ist es, die Vielfalt an Theorien der Sozialpädagogik einer kritischen Bestandsaufnahme zu unterziehen, zu diskutieren und zu systematisieren, um so das potentielle Theorie-Dilemma innerhalb der Sozialpädagogik aufzulösen und neue, innovative Wege für eine im Wesentlichen an pädagogischen Dimensionen orientierte Theorie der Sozialpädagogik aufzuzeigen.
