Feminist concerns about the epistemological problems of quantitative methods have resulted in an underdevelopment of quantitative approaches that could contribute to existing intersectional theory. Further, feminist scholars commonly consider the effects of gender as it intersects with race or class, but relatively little of this research has included nativity (being either an immigrant or native-born to a society). This article addresses these shortcomings by examining patterns of earnings inequality at the intersection of gender, race, and nativity, comparing cohorts of African-born Black and white immigrants to their US-born counterparts over multiple time-points. Further, the depressive effects of gender are large enough so that while there are differences in women's earnings across race and nativity, nearly all groups of men still earn more than nearly all groups of women. The article's results demonstrate that privilege has a magnifying effect, with the advantages conferred from one privileged status increasing the effects of other privilege statuses, which become larger over time. These findings contribute to how feminists understand privileges and oppressions emerging from the intersections of gender with other social statuses, and how such intersections shape economic inequality.

Abstract
This article draws from Françoise Vergès's book, Le ventre des femmes: Capitalisme, racialisation, féminisme,* which traces the history of the colonization of the wombs of Black women by the French state in the 1960s and 1970s through forced abortions and the forced sterilization of women in French foreign territories. Vergès retraces the long history of colonial state intervention in Black women's wombs during the slave trade and post-slavery imperialism, and after World War II, when international institutions and Western states blamed the poverty and underdevelopment of the Third World on women of color. Vergès looks at the feminist and Women's Liberation movements in France in the 1960s and 1970s and asks why, at a time of French consciousness about colonialism brought about by Algerian independence and the social transformations of 1968, these movements chose to ignore the history of the racialization of women's wombs in state politics. In making the liberalization of contraception and abortion their primary aim, she argues, French feminists inevitably ended up defending the rights of white women at the expense of women of color, in a shift from women's liberation to women's rights.

Decentralized forest management is criticized for not involving women in decision-making. The study explores what the introduction of affirmative policy in community forestry committees means for the participation of women in decision making in four cases in the middle hills of Nepal. The qualitative analysis of interviews and observations draws on feminist political ecology, a women's participation typology, the critical mass theory and gender justice. The findings centre on the importance of electoral procedures, the role of authorities, the role of the familial context and whether and how women internalized and contested patriarchal norms. The women's quota was found to have had as yet little impact on substantive participation, yet the enhanced exposure of female committee members to the discrepancy between the gender equality discourse introduced in community forestry and the persistent male domination seemed to create, in a few women performing as critical actors, an enhanced awareness of male suppression; an awareness that is a prerequisite for contestation of those patriarchal norms denying women access to power over forest and, generally speaking, of gender injustice. This research reports examples of women, brought in the executive committees by the studied affirmative policies, successfully contesting traditional gender roles and gender injustice, negotiating for them and for the other women, a more effective and meaningful participation in the management of Community Forests.

This essay analyzes Michif filmmaker Amanda Strong's 2018 stop-motion film about urban syrup making, Biidaaban (The Dawn Comes) within the context of some scholars' claim that it is nearly impossible to imagine a world outside of capitalism. Drawing on decolonial Indigenous political theory and feminist thought, the essay argues that Biidaaban illustrates the political possibilities of Indigenous slipstream, a subgenre of Indigenous science fiction characterized by nonlinear time, to bring about liberatory worlds in the face of forces that make the capitalist order appear natural. Theories of Indigenous aesthetics also highlight how embodied practices—including both syrup making and stop-motion animation—are part of an ongoing process of creation and remaking of the world. These perspectives point to the generative function of visual art, breaking down the boundary between representation and action. Following from these ideas, the essays shows how Biidaaban is an assertion of Indigenous sovereignty and a generative step in the process of world making.

AbstractFeminist family scholars have long called for greater transparency of the partial perspectives embedded within family science. In this paper, I employ feminist reflexive autoethnography to unpack the private motivations that guide my research on family complexity. Using critical storytelling, I trace the personal developments that led to a research program on structurally complex families—families shaped and reshaped by divorce, separations, repartnerships, and remarriages. I explore my commitments to naming the invisible, embracing the messy, and ultimately, humanizing the complicated and meaningful emotions and relationships in families navigating structural changes. I draw upon personal, embodied experiences to theorize about issues and phenomena that have yet to be named in the (step)family scholarship. Finally, I invite others to heed the calls of feminist scholars whose work invites us to consider how private experiences can be leveraged to generate new insights into the complexities of family and social life.

Women's Political and Social Thought: An Anthology is the first collection of source readings of women's important writings in political and social theory from ancient times to the twentieth century. It fills a major gap in materials available for teaching the history of political thought and opens paths for exploring the rich and diverse contributions of women as creators of theory. Not confined to works of feminist theory, this anthology makes available substantial selections from women's writings across the political spectrum and in varied forms, from epic poetry, fiction, drama, and autobiography to prose works on history, politics, religion, and philosophy. To illustrate the breadth of interests of women political theorists, the selections highlight works ranging from the political poetry and fiction of Enheduanna, Sappho, Sor Juana, Phillis Wheatley, Tekahionwake, and Ding Ling, to the Dialogue of St. Catherine, Christine de Pizan's Book of the Body Politic, Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Men, Tristan's The Workers' Union, Butler's Government by Police, Wells-Barnett's Southern Horrors, Hossain's Sultana's Dream, Weil's Reflections Concerning the Causes of Liberty and Social Oppression, and Mashinini's Strikes Have Followed Me All My Life. The broad-ranging texts included in the volume cross many boundaries of time, space, class, race, sex, culture, genre, and ideology. The book includes a general introduction by Berenice Carroll, biographical introductions by Carroll or Smith for each of the authors, suggested readings for individual authors, and a selected bibliography.

Este artículo forma parte de una investigación mayor cuyo objetivo es interpretar los testimonios de prisión política latinoamericana de mujeres desde la teoría feminista para establecer nuevos parámetros para la comprensión y configuración de la mujer en la historia en tanto sujeto político y social activo. En este caso se analizará el testimonio de la brasileña Maria Amélia de Almeida, entendiendo este texto como un espacio de enunciación válido de una experiencia límite, construido a partir del intercambio de vivencias subjetivas que reafirmarán a la mujer como un sujeto político inserta en un contexto de presidio, violencia y transgresión. Así, esta sobreviviente expondrá cómo el género, al ser una estructura social, construye relaciones desiguales y legitima diferencias no solo en la participación política del propio partido, sino también, y sobre todo, en la represión padecida, enfocándose en cómo la dimensión sicológica de las torturas sexuales también adquiere un particular carácter de género. ; Este artigo é parte de uma pesquisa mais ampla, cujo objetivo é interpretar os depoimentos e testemunhos de prisão política de mulheres latino-americanas, utilizando a teoria feminista para estabelecer novos parâmetros para a compreensão e configuração da mulher na história enquanto sujeito sócio-político ativo. In this case, I will analyze the testimony of Maria Amélia de Almeida from Brazil, understanding this text as a valid space of declaration of a to the limit-experience, originated from the exchange of subjective experiences that will reaffirm this woman as a political subject placed in a context of a prison, violence and transgression. Thus, this survivor will expose how gender, being a social structure, builds unequal relationships and legitimizes differences, not only in the political participation of the party itself, but also –and above all– in the repression suffered, where we will be focusing on how the psychological dimension of sexual tortures also acquire a particular gender character.

AbstractIn this article I caution that María Lugones's critiques of Kimberlé Crenshaw's intersectional theory posit a dangerous form of epistemic erasure, which underlies Lugones's decolonial methodology. This essay serves as a critical engagement with Lugones's essay "Radical Multiculturalism and Women of Color Feminisms" in order to uncover the decolonial lens within Crenshaw's theory of intersectionality. In her assertion that intersectionality is a "white bourgeois feminism colluding with the oppression of Women of Color," Lugones precludes any possibility of intersectionality operating as a decolonial method. Although Lugones states that her "decolonial feminism" is for all women of color, it ultimately excludes Black women, particularly with her misconstruing of Crenshaw's articulation of intersectionality that is rooted within the Black American feminist tradition. I explore Lugones's claims by juxtaposing her rendering of intersectionality with Crenshaw's and conclude that Lugones's decolonial theory risks erasing Black women from her framework.

In recent years there have been significant improvements in the number of women elected to parliament in Africa. However, there is little indication that this is translating into better developmental outcomes, and indeed there is mounting evidence that it could in fact help to bolster some authoritarian regimes. Starting from the premise that politics is a far broader project than securing a seat in national or local legislatures alone, this book explores the opportunities for women's political participation across a number of informal spaces where women and men gather, organise and interact in a more regular and systematic manner. Combining insights from political science, sociology and feminist theory and drawing on detailed cases from the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria and Rwanda, it examines how power in its multiple dimensions circulates across a range of everyday political spaces, while drawing attention to the links between domestic gender inequalities and the global political economy. "Reproducing Europe argues that current European films focus on female characters in order to negotiate the transformations of labor of the last decades. Based on an analysis of approximately two hundred European films made since 2000 that focus on the relationship of women to their work, the book analyzes a cross-section of national cinemas and film genres, clustered according to pertinent topics in the theories of gendered labor. As reproductive labor now also includes the "donation" of eggs and organs, and the possibility of outsourcing pregnancy, dystopian narratives tell stories of refugees and clones who become the raw materials for organ harvesting. Farces and comedies exaggerate the habits of the global managerial class, while social realist dramas capture precarious working conditions in narratives about unemployed women. And films from countries affected by the global financial crisis (Greece, Spain, Portugal) emphasize the patriarchal family, a debt economy, and unemployment. Proposing the relevance of key concepts developed in second-wave feminist theory, the book updates categories of reproductive labor and the sexual contract. The postindustrial, neoliberal, and transnational character of Europe, with its decline of heavy industry, rise of service work, increase in migration since the expansion of the EU, and innovation in biotechnology has changed the organization of work. Films respond to these developments with a narrative emphasis on work, embodied by female characters more than ever before"--
