The author believes that despite the broader conception of mechanization, agricultural mechanization was adversely affected by the post-Mao rural reforms. In this article, he stresses the mechanization of "cultivation tasks" (zhongzhiye), and especially on tractors because of their importance in China's mechanization scheme (often identified as "tractorization"). Focusing on the period 1977-'87, the author suggests that China's mechanization policy has been severely downgraded in the post-Mao period. (DÜI-Sen)
