The Protestant Assembly at Loudun which met with the permission of the King takes the opportunity to make some requests of him. As the Peace of Loudun was concluded between the Prince de Condé and the Crown, the Huguenots, who had not really allied themselves totally with Condé, were nevertheless anxious to let the King know of their fidelity. As the great princes left the court in February 1614 they plunged themselves into intrigues against the government. In this pamphlet they announce that their discontent is due to disorder and confusion in the government which followed the death of the King. They disapprove of Marie de Medicis' method of governing. The Double is dated from Mezieres 19 February 1614. Condé attempts to justify his revolt and explain why he left the court and gathered his friends at Mezieres. This pamphlet gives the details of a meeting of the King's Council in which a discussion of the Valtelline took place. By 1625, this strategically located Valtelline had been virtually handed to Spain. Hence, no land communication existed between France and the Venetian Republic or the Italian princes. The pamphlet reports that at this meeting the discussion went on for some time until Richelieu, who had been standing in a corner, approached the King with a plan to make peace - for the time being - until the religious strife in France could be overcome. After Louis XIII attained his majority many pamphlets were published which gave the young King counsel and advice. This pamphlet, possiby by d'Athier, is an example of this type of moderate propoganda as it outlines the duties of kings, the preservation of peace for which remedies are suggested, with a review of the hierarchy of rulers and subjects. This is a response made by the French King (actually the French government) to the opposition by Great Britain to the Spanish marriages being planned by France and Spain. This pamphlet is attributed to Antoine Arnaud, 1560-1619, the ""avocat-général"" of Catherine de Medicis. He had also served under Henry IV and was considered as having temperate, sensible political mind. This pamphlet is another version of his ""Advice"" to Louis XIII. Jacques Auguste de Thou was a lifelong servant of the French monarchy. He served Henry III, Henry IV, and Louis XIII in various capacities. He is best know for his Histoire de Son Temps, a history of France.
