Examines the history of the women's movement to protest rape & other violence against women in wartime. It is argued that this history had a strong impact on how the issue of violence was addressed at the 1995 International Conference on Women in Beijing, People's Republic of China. The inception of international organizations in the late 19th century, & their subsequent growth during the WWI era, resulted in a turn away from national thinking & laid the structural basis for solidarity, strengthened by the common bonds of political & economic powerlessness.
