Conflicting commitments: the politics of enforcing immigrant worker rights in San Jose and Houston
"In Conflicting Commitments, Shannon Gleeson goes beyond the debate over federal immigration policy to examine the complicated terrain of immigrant worker rights. Federal law requires that basic labor standards apply to all workers, yet this principle clashes with increasingly restrictive immigration laws and creates a confusing bureaucratic terrain for local policymakers and labor advocates. Gleeson examines this issue in two of the largest immigrant gateways in the country: San Jose, California, and Houston, Texas. Conflicting Commitments reveals two cities with very different approaches to addressing the exploitation of immigrant workers--both involving the strategic coordination of a range of bureaucratic brokers, but in strikingly different ways. Drawing on the real life accounts of ordinary workers, federal, state, and local government officials, community organizers, and consular staff, Gleeson argues that local political contexts matter for protecting undocumented workers in particular. Providing a rich description of the bureaucratic minefields of labor law, and the explosive politics of immigrant rights, Gleeson shows how the lessons learned from San Jose and Houston can inform models for upholding labor and human rights in the United States"--Publisher's Web site

San Jose de Quiruvilca - Origen y vicisitudes de un asiento minero
In: Investigaciones Sociales, Band 15, Heft 27, S. 133-179
ISSN: 1818-4758
Employment, Restructuring, and Gender: The Case of San Jose, Costa Rica
In: Studies in comparative international development, Band 31, Heft 3, S. 85-122
ISSN: 0039-3606
Examines changes in the San Jose, Costa Rico, labor market, 1980-1991, with respect to gender & social class. Recent literature on global economic transformations suggests restructured & increased inequalities on an international scale, particularly in small countries on the periphery of the world economy. The case of San Jose offers limited support for theories of parallel global & local restructuring. Data indicate greater job growth for San Jose women, with a large share coming from semiskilled, skilled, & professional occupations; higher educational attainment; & a net transfer of female employment from the public to private sector. Every industry has experienced a worsening of employment composition resulting in greater class inequalities for men & women. It is argued that individual aspects of the Costa Rican experience, eg, the liberal market reforms of the 1980s, mediate the effects of global restructuring. It is suggested that future comparative research focus on the interplay of domestic & international economics & politics. 12 Tables, 112 References. Adapted from the source document.

SAVING PATTERN OF SMALL-SCALE WOMEN RICE FARMERS IN SAN JOSE, OCCIDENTAL MINDORO
In: Journal of Asian rural studies: JARS, Band 5, Heft 1, S. 48
ISSN: 2548-3269
The study aims to assess the saving and investment pattern of women rice farmers in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. The study was conducted in the rice-producing barangays of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, namely: Mabini, Mapaya, and Mangarin from February to July 2017. The study population included all women farmers who were involved in different rice farming activities from production to marketing. The 48 respondents were randomly selected. Informed consent was sought before the conduct of the study. Descriptive statistics like mean, percentages, and frequency distribution were used to assess the women farmers' profile. While Pearson Moment Correlation was used to test the relationship between the variables. The result shows that the small-scale women farmers have a small household size and small farm sizes with an income above the poverty threshold. They "sometimes" save through cash and "frequently" save through non-cash. They "frequently" encountered problems in saving capacity. Further, farm size is significantly related to the savings pattern of women rice farmers. Socio-economic characteristics have no relationship with constraints to saving capacity. The study suggests using other variables to further determine the saving pattern and saving capacity of the women rice farmers.
Analysis of postharvest handling of table eggs produced in San Jose, Batangas, Philippines
© 2017, International Society for Southeast Asian Agricultural Sciences. All rights reserved. The study analyzed the postharvest handling practices done on table eggs by the market participants in San Jose, Batangas, Philippines through a survey conducted from February to May 2016. Data obtained from 60 farmer-respondents and 31 market intermediary-respondents were subjected to cost and returns analysis, partial budgeting, and combination of price margin and ladder pricing analysis along with descriptive analysis. Forward tracing was performed to identify the channels where table eggs passed before reaching final consumers. Farmers, assembler-wholesalers, wholesalers and retailers were involved in the marketing of table eggs produced in San Jose, Batangas. Practices performed can be a combination of the following: assembly, cleaning, sorting and grading, storing, packaging and transporting. Assembly and transporting are usually done by the assembler-wholesalers. Farmers store the eggs at their houses while market intermediaries have their own storage houses. Farmers used polystyrene trays whereas market intermediaries used the cheaper egg carton trays. Results revealed that small- to medium-scale farmers and traders manually sorted and graded the eggs while only a few large-scale farmers used mechanized grading facilities. Both did not conform to the Philippine National Standards. Re-grading was practiced along the marketing chain resulting to re-grading profit. It was concluded that farmers and market-intermediaries who adopt postharvest handling practices generated more profit. Promoting awareness on the proper performance of cleaning as a postharvest handling practice to minimize losses was recommended. The use of uniform standards by the BAFPS-PNS was likewise suggested to be properly implemented in cooperation with the local government units (LGU) serving as the front-liner.
