Based on the post-1989 Cultural Geography studies and the Geographic studies of Religion, the present essay aimed to explore the relationship between religion and media in the age of 2.0, the age of social networks and the diffusion of media. In order to achieve this goal, we tried to understand how these new social relations occur through hypermodernity, which is characterized by the culture of excess, the intensification of values and a greater diversification of production aimed at consumption. We have also discussed how the process of development and propagation of the media and the cyberspace create new strategies for diffusion of faith. Through political, economic and local dimensions, we were able to understand the new connections between the sacred, the faith and the new dynamics of hypermodern society. The Roman Catholic Church in Brazil and the new spatial and territorial transformations through cyberspace and media are the empirical examples of the present research.

AbstractA growing body of literature focuses on gay men's use of mobile dating applications or "dating apps." Running on smartphones and working with GPS, dating apps connect users to others in close geographic proximity and often in real time. These apps allow users to create profiles to present themselves and interact with each other to reach multiple goals, such as casual sex, dating, or networking. Attending to the dynamics between communication technologies and society, this article reviews gay dating app studies that highlight the communicative practices and social relations mediated by dating apps. Using the mediation framework as a starting point, we examine major themes in these studies, including gay men's online self‐presentation and interactions, gay community in the digital era, and gay men's interpersonal relationships. We suggest that future research should pay more attention to the technical development of dating devices and the transformation of gay men's social relations.

The disappearance of class voting in post-industrial societies has often been announced in recent decades. Few studies, however, have focused on the self-employed, an occupational category which tends to combine the properties of a social class and a status group. The UK, Italy, and Spain present different traditions but similar levels of class voting in the early 2000s, with a persisting tendency of the self-employed to vote for centre-right parties. These three countries also saw the subsequent growth of "third" parties. Using data on parliamentary elections from the 2004, 2009, and 2014 European Election Studies, we continue to find evidence of this form of class voting, which we relate to the specific political and social dispositions of the self-employed. But we also find a decline during the decade considered, which we impute to ideological convergence of the mainstream left and right parties along the fundamental "workers vs. owners" class cleavage.

Mediatization and Mediality in Social Media: the Discourse System Twitter The article contributes to the debate about mediatization and the use of language in social media. The theoretical approach evolves from the intersection of linguistics, media and communication studies. While the concept of mediatization describes relations between medial and sociocultural change and the ubiquity of media in everyday life, the concept of mediality sheds light on the inseparability of media and language. From this interdisciplinary perspective, specific practices of media and language use within the microblogging service Twitter were analyzed. Examples from different case studies reveal certain user practices that can be described as formed by 'moulding forces' of the medium Twitter without considering technology as determining or symptomatic. Our analysis shows that the use of specific semiotic and functional operators (#, @, RT, http://) establish user practices of creating personal and semantic references and thus constitute Twitter as a multi-referential discourse system.

Until the 1890s, most public affairs surrounding the Slovak elites were managed from the small town of Turčianský Sväty Martin in Turiec County, and based on a long-lasting programme drawn up in 1861 that mainly focused, in a classical approach from the late 1840s, on language and national individuality of the Slovaks vis-à-vis both Hungarians and Czechs.A shift occurred from the early 1900s onwards, deeply modifying the main axis of public and social activities of the educated Slovak milieu. This shift coincided with an emerging new generation influenced by foreign experiences observed personally during their studies in the Empire – and in the Czech Lands especially – or abroad. It was also based on long-standing family ties and local/regional solidarities. This paper studies how and to what extent these factors deeply renewed the approach of social reflection in the mostly Slovak Counties of the Kingdom of Hungary during the first decade of the 20th century.

Saturation of data has been acknowledged by many social scientists as evidence of rigor in qualitative research. Though there is a consensus about its definition and usefulness in qualitative research, the methods for achieving saturation are scarce while the social scientists who mention data saturation in their research methodologies do not adequately describe how this is achieved. This paper describes a new method for achieving saturation in studies that use interviews. The method is called Comparative Method for Themes Saturation (CoMeTS). CoMeTS is comparative in two ways. First, all themes from all interviews are compared with each other. Second, the sequence of interviews is reordered multiple times in order to check saturation again. This is because the sequence of interviews during the check makes saturation vary and, therefore, reordering helps confirming saturation. This paper concludes that CoMeTS is a simple, comparative and holistic method for achieving saturation and that it can be used in complicated qualitative studies.

The academic literature shows that studies in the fields of Community Psychology and Group Psychology have reached the same conclusion: belonging to and identifying with a group has an impact on health. However, when the studies are reviewed, there seems to be little communication between those engaged in these two lines of work, as contributions made from the perspective of Community are not compared with those made from that of Social Identity. Therefore, this study opts for an integrative perspective that makes possible progress towards a political/social viewpoint. Specifically, it is sought to understand the relationship between identification with the neighbourhood in which one lives (what has been called "community identity") and the mental health of Malaga's immigrant population, a model being proposed in which the relationship between health and identity is mediated by empowerment. ; Universidad de Málaga. El autor expone y analiza desde una perspectiva diacrónica la evolución de los estudios culturales desde su nacimiento hasta la actualidad. En especial, este estudio descriptivo se centra en el proceso y las consecuencias del abandono del análisis sociológico marxista y, en concreto, de los postulados de la economía política. Un abandono que, en la práctica, tiene como consecuencia la incapacidad de los estudios culturales para llevar a cabo su objetivo original y fundamental: la transformación social. ; This article analyses the development of the cultural studies from its birth until present time. Especially, this descriptive study is focus in the process and the consequences of the abandonment of the sociological Marxist analysis and, in short, of the postulates of the political economy. An abandonment that, in the practice, it has as consequence the inability of the cultural studies to carry out their original and fundamental objective: the social transformation.

Extensive knowledge exists regarding how to comprehend the embeddedness of everyday energy usage and resultant demand trajectories within wider social and material contexts. Researchers have explored how people find themselves locked into everyday ways of using energy, and how energy systems have evolved to entangle together practices and sociotechnological infrastructures. There is widespread acceptance that the challenges of transforming inconspicuous habitual ways of using energy require research attention. What is less clear is how to approach the study of everyday energy use to reflect the ways in which people make their daily lives meaningful. This article draws on sociological studies of family life and psychosocial research to thicken existing research on material infrastructures and social practices in energy use and demand reduction studies. Findings concern how relational entanglements have a bearing on everyday practices involving energy, with significant potential to deepen understanding of historically embedded change in people's everyday energy dependencies.

Jurisprudential recognition of common-law relationship between cohabitating partners in 1935 by the Colombian Supreme Court of Justice during the "Liberal Republic" period is approached from the Critical Legal Studies principles. This analysis will demonstrate that this decision was possible after Liberalism regained power following 44 years of conservative governments, for which purpose they had to leave exegesis and open Law to social events with the Free Scientific Research School. ; Se aborda desde los postulados de los Critical Legal Studies el reconocimiento jurisprudencial de la sociedad de hecho entre concubinos en 1935 por parte de la Corte Suprema de Justicia colombiana, en el periodo de "la República Liberal", Se demostrará que esta decisión fue posible tras la vuelta al poder político del liberalismo después de 44 años de gobiernos conservadores, para lo cual se debió abandonar la exégesis para abrir el Derecho a los hechos sociales con la Escuela de la libre Investigación Científica.

Although there is a tradition of examining generalized discrimination against multiple targets, recent studies have tended to consider race and homosexuality as separate targets without considering their relationship with each other. Recent studies have also argued for a moral dimension in attitudes to homosexuality, but this has not yet been explicitly modeled as an explanation for patterns of social attitudes. In a questionnaire study of practicing Australian Christians (N = 143), we examined the relationship of religious orientation and ideology (intrinsic, extrinsic, fundamentalism, orthodoxy, and quest) with four attitude targets (Aboriginal Australians, women, homosexual persons, and abortion). Using structural equation modeling (SEM), we develop a two-factor model, incorporating group and moral orientation factors, which completely mediates the relationships between the religiosity variables and the social attitudes. Religiosity variables exhibit different patterns of correlation with the two factors. The two-factor model provides a useful framework for further exploration of socially and politically contested attitudes.

Measuring territorial disparities is the first step in studies aiming to improve territorial cohesion. As intraregional disparities are often higher than inter-regional ones, an analysis of development at local level is needed in order to define areas of intervention for specific targeted policies. The aim of this study is to individualise deprived areas in Romania's South West region through the use of the Principal Component Analysis run on 15 social, economic, demographic and physical indicators defined at local level (LAU 2 units). By computing a global index of deprived areas, 13 areas were individualised at regional level, with the results being compared with other studies on deprived areas (Romania's poverty map, Social Development Index and Less-favoured areas). The final output showcased the differences in defining deprived areas according to the used methodology, with a need to standardise such methods for policy targeting in the future while also considering environmental quality factors.

This article discusses ethical decisions in the qualitative research of homes, with particular focus on a situation, in which a researcher studies his/her own migrant community. While exploring more common topics, such as negotiating access and receiving permission to photograph within participants' homes, this article will also highlight issues that occur specifically within community-based ethnographic studies among Russian migrants. Using examples from the study of Russian immigrants' homes in the UK, this article raises important questions of social positioning and power distribution within studied community. It will demonstrate the complexities of ethical decision making at different stages of the research process, which reflects the constantly changing relationship(s) between the cultural and social backgrounds and identities of researchers and participants. The insider and outsider role of the researcher is relative and the constant need to balance it, while simultaneously creating difficult ethical dilemmas, often reveals rich data and moves the whole research process forward.

В статье исследуется лингвистическая проблематика политического дискурса как центральной вербальной категории социальной сферы общества и государства и, в частности, рассматриваются трактовки понятия «дискурс» в контексте вербальной коммуникации, краткая история появления и базовые направления политической лингвистики как специализированной дисциплины, изучающей социальный язык, характеристики современного немецкоязычного политического дискурса как вербальной категории, его отношения с экстраи интралингвистическими параметрами немецкого общества и немецкого языка. ; The article studies the linguistic problematics of political discourse as a central verbal category of the social sphere of the society and state and, in particular, considers the interpretations of the notion "discourse" in the context of verbal communication, the brief history of the emergence and the basic directions of political linguistics as a specialized discipline that studies the social language, the characteristics of the modern German-speaking political discourse as a verbal category, its relationship with extraand intra-linguistic parameters of the German society and the German language.
