'The article offers a brief resume of recent developments in the field of interpretative visual analysis with emphasis on the German speaking area and the sociological discipline. It lays a special focus on hermeneutical and genre analysis and on research with audiovisual data. Far from constituting an already closed field, the authors stress the fact that methodological advances in qualitative research based in visual data still face a number of pending quests. This encompasses sequentiality, complexity and naturalness of video-graphic data, and extends to the respective methodological challenges for transcription, analysis and presentation of results.' Der Beitrag gibt eine kurze Zusammenfassung der jüngeren Entwicklung im Bereich der visuellen interpretativen Analyse, mit besonderem Gewicht auf den deutschsprachigen Raum und auf die Soziologie. Sein Hauptfokus liegt auf der hermeneutischen und gattungsanalytischen Forschung mit audiovisuellen Daten. Angesichts eines alles andere als bereits klar umrissenen Feldes betonen die Autoren den Umstand, dass der methodologische Fortschritt in der Forschung mit audiovisuellen Daten sich mit einer Reihe von anhängigen Fragen konfrontiert sieht. Sie betreffen unter anderem die Sequenzialität, Komplexität und Natürlichkeit von Videodaten sowie methodische Herausforderungen für die Transkription, Analyse und Präsentation der Ergebnisse.

Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit gestischen Zeigehandlungen in Präsentationen und argumentiert gegen eine analytische Auflösung in separate 'Modalitäten'. Zeigegesten haben eine enorme Bedeutung für die Powerpoint-Präsentation, weil Redner damit gestische und körperliche Zeichen einsetzen, die Rede und Visualisierung in einen sinnvollen Zusammenhang bringen. Insgesamt kommt in Präsentationen neben den klassischen Zeigeinstrumenten (Hand, Laserpointer, Zeigestock) dem Körper und einer bestimmten Körperformation als Dreh- und Angelpunkt eine zentrale Rolle für die Aufmerksamkeitssteuerung zu.

AbstractThis article analyzes the cult of the souls in Purgatory in Puerto Berrío, Colombia, and its relationship with the Catholic Church. Through empirical evidence, it identifies three characteristics of this cult, namely, its relative independence from the Catholic Church, its heterogeneity and its utilitarian character, and compares them with other cases of Latin American popular Catholicism. The particularities of the cult enable an analysis of how popular religion, rather than generating a conflict with the Catholic Church, maintains an ambiguous relationship with it. The case shows that popular religion not only incorporates the symbolic structure of the Catholic Church to legitimize itself, but also that the church tolerates it, contributing to the peaceful coexistence of the popular and the institutionalized. Consequently, this leads believers, instead of adhering to a supposed binary opposition, to shift between popular and institutionalized religion.
