Background: The present study was conducted to evaluate the central corneal thickness in patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). Material and Method: The study was conducted in Department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College Srinagar Jammu & Kashmir, India between October 2016 and January 2018. The study group included 424 eyes of 212 patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis and 424 eyes of 212 age and sex matched normal subjects were selected as a control group. The central corneal thickness was measured with TOPCON SP-3000(USA). Result: In the study group,out of 212 patients, 145 were males and 67 were females. Majority were in the age group of 5-10 years. The mean central corneal thickness was 495.9?30.7?m in the study group and 540.30?38.91 μm in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: The central corneal thickness in patients with Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is low as compared to age and sex matched control population.Evaluation of corneal thickness is important in situations such as corneal refractive surgery and contact lens use, and is an essential parameter in a wide range of ocular disorders, including glaucoma and keratoco?nus. Therefore, ophthalmologists should be aware of the low central corneal thickness in patients with Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis.

Objective The number of adults with diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is expected to almost double by 2035. This study investigated the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and its risk factors at entry into a community-based screening programme. MethodsAll persons with diabetes screened for retinopathy at entry into a screening programme in Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania between November 2010 and December 2014 were included. Fundus photographs were taken with a Topcon retinal camera following pupil dilation. Data were collected on BP, random blood sugar, duration of diabetes, BMI and visual acuity on entry. ResultsA total of 3187 persons were screened for DR. The prevalence of any DR was 27.9% (95%CI 26.4-29.5%) with background diabetic retinopathy (BDR), pre-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PPDR) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) having a prevalence of 19.1% (95% CI 17.7-20.4%), 6.0% (95%CI 5.2-6.8%) and 2.9% (95%CI 2.3-3.5%), respectively. Maculopathy was present in 16.1% (95%CI 14.8-17.4%) of participants. Multivariable logistic regression analysis for the presence of any DR found independent associations with duration of diabetes (P <0.0001), systolic BP (P <0.0001), random blood sugar (P <0.0001) and attending a government hospital diabetic clinic (P = 0.0339). ConclusionsThis study is the first to present data from a DR screening programme in SSA. The results will provide policymakers with data to aid planning of DR screening and treatment services in the African region. The study highlights the importance of managing comorbidities within DR screening programmes.

El Observatorio Sismológico de la Universidad del Quindío (OSQ) cuenta con 6 estaciones sismológicas (Bolívar y Peñas Blancas de banda ancha, Caicedonia y Peñas Blancas analógicas, Modín y Riberalta de tipo digital) y 3 estaciones acelerográficas (Uniquindio, Calarcá y Génova) distribuidas estratégicamente en el departamento del Quindío y el Valle del Cauca con los que se lleva a cabo el monitoreo de la actividad sísmica de la zona. Dichas estaciones se encuentran georreferenciadas, pero son datos tomados hace 20 años que no han sido referenciados usando equipos de alta precisión, por esta razón, el Sistema de Posicionamiento (GNSS) se implementa con ayuda de un software especializado en la compilación de los datos y por consiguiente se mejora la localización de los eventos sísmicos registrados en el (OSQ). Para la recolección de la información se programaron campañas de medición usando la herramienta de Software GNSS Planning Online que permite conocer el día y el horario en que existe mayor disponibilidad de satélites para obtener mayor precisión. Para el procesamiento de los datos, se utilizó el método de postproceso que permite corregir los errores sistemáticos que se presentan durante la captura de información en campo y posteriormente se realizó un ajuste con el software TopCon Tools para entregar resultados con el menor error posible. Como producto final de la investigación, se entrega al (OSQ), un catálogo con las coordenadas geográficas de las estaciones debidamente georreferenciadas y ubicadas en un mapa de la región dejando un insumo que favorece las actividades realizadas por esta dependencia.

After a complete ophthalmic evaluation, subjects were divided into four age groups to assess differences between age groups in relation to IPD. The age groups were 20–30, 31–50, 51–70, and 71–89 years. Far IPD measurements were performed using an autorefractometer (Topcon RM-8800).Results: The mean age was 48.42±20.55 years, ranging from 19 to 89 years. The mean IPD was calculated as 62.5±4.1 mm (range 49–76). The mean IPD value was observed to be significantly higher among males compared to females (P<0.001). The difference among groups in terms of mean IPD was statistically significant (P<0.001). IPD increased by 4.19 mm in males and 3.11 mm in females from the young adults (20–30 years) to older adults (51–70 years), and then a decrease (2.6 and 0.19 mm for males and females, respectively) occurred between 70 and 89 years of age.Conclusion: The current study offers the population-specific normative data on far IPD in different age groups. Our study showed that sex and age had a significant effect on IPD. Knowledge of normal values in this population subgroup may be useful in studying orbito-cranial growth patterns, syndrome diagnosis, surgical management of cranio-facial deformities and trauma, and manufactures of optical frames and lenses.Keywords: interpupillary distance, age, sex, Turkish population, refraction
Project Riese (German for giant) in Owl Mountains, located in Lower Silesia, is the biggest mining and building project of Nazi Germany. The construction work was done by forced laborers, POWs, and prisoners of concentration camp Gross-Rosen. Many of them lost their lives. Whole project was kept in secret, even the beginning of the construction work is unclear. The purpose of Riese remains uncertain because of lack of documentation, it is still rather a hypothesis than a fact. The only verified information is that the project was abandoned at the initial stage due to approach of the Red Army. Before that Nazis put a lot of effort to hide all information about Riese. Today we can see how successful these efforts were. Nowdays six underground structures are discovered in Walim and Głuszyca area: Włodarz (3000 meters of tunnels), Osówka (1700 meters of tunnels), Sokolec (or Gontów, 800 meters of tunnels), Soboń (740 meters of tunnels), Rzeczka (560 meters of tunnels), Jugowice (500 meters of tunnels) and about 600 meters of tunnels under Książ Castle in Walbyrzych (Aniszewski 2002, Graba 2012). It has been found that many of the tunnels in some structures have a dead end and there is a theory this might proof that all complexes were supposed to be combined. It is believed that many kilometres of the underground tunnels are still to be discovered (Cera 1998).Whole area is one of the most popular destinations for treasure hunters and scientists. Nowadays treasure hunters are using not only maps and metal detectors, but also GPRs. Scientists are interested in Riese because of many underground tunnels in various sizes and depth, as well as huge amount of steel which was used to reinforce adits. All these details allow scientists to perform many different types of research. Geophysicists are testing the equipment and methodology in the area of gravimetric, magnetic and GPR measurements. All geophysics measurement need to be put into coordinate system, local or global. Moreover in order to eliminate gravity or magnetic effect of the excavations and steel reinforce their shape must be known (Porzucek 2013). To meet the needs of scientists, researchers, tourists and museum authorities, authors of this report, with the help of students, performed full inventory of Complex Osówka. It was performed in 2015 and covered all underground and ground objects.1700 meters of underground tunnels in main part of the complex (Museum of Underground City Osówka) were scanned, together with 130 meters of Sztolnia Wodna (from polish water adit) and two ground objects: Siłownia and Kasyno. These two are suppose to be nuclear energy plant and Hitler's headquarters or command headquarters (Cera 1998). During measurements laser scanner (Faro, Focus 3D), tachymeter (Topcon, OS103) and GPS receivers (Topcon, HiperPro) for georeferency were used.The collected material was used to analyze geometrical relations between objects of Osówka complex. Report presents location of objects in relations to each other which was not previously verified in research or verified in the other ways. Another inventory result is a virtual museum, available from 1st April for everybody on Museum of Underground City Osówka website (www.osowka.pl). User can virtually explore whole complex, including places where visitors are not allowed. During measurements flooded adits have been also inventoried: the ones in the museum and in Sztolnia Wodna (entrance collapsed in November 2015 and the whole adit is in danger of collapsing). Inventory also included Siłownia (firstly water has been pumped out to allow measurements in the staircase and alleged lift shaft). Another inaccessible place available during virtual tour is shaft connecting the forest near Kasyno to the undergrounds. Virtual tour allows also measuring selected surface or distance between chosen points and checking coordinates or height in particular spot. User can generate a link to a screen which interests him and upload it on any website.It must be said that sharing so many detailed and precise data does not equal allowing to perform any research and measurements in all these spots. Project Riese is located on the land belonging to local government, individuals and National Forests (majority of it). Before taking any actions, area manager must give his permission. Physical activity (PA) may modify the genetic effects that give rise to increased risk of obesity. To identify adiposity loci whose effects are modified by PA, we performed genome-wide interaction meta-analyses of BMI and BMI-adjusted waist circumference and waist-hip ratio from up to 200,452 adults of European (n = 180,423) or other ancestry (n = 20,029). We standardized PA by categorizing it into a dichotomous variable where, on average, 23% of participants were categorized as inactive and 77% as physically active. While we replicate the interaction with PA for the strongest known obesity-risk locus in the FTO gene, of which the effect is attenuated by ~30% in physically active individuals compared to inactive individuals, we do not identify additional loci that are sensitive to PA. Few genome-wide association studies (GWAS) account for environmental exposures, like smoking, potentially impacting the overall trait variance when investigating the genetic contribution to obesity-related traits. Here, we use GWAS data from 51,080 current smokers and 190,178 nonsmokers (87% European descent) to identify loci influencing BMI and central adiposity, measured as waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio both adjusted for BMI. We identify 23 novel genetic loci, and 9 loci with convincing evidence of gene-smoking interaction (GxSMK) on obesity-related traits. We show consistent direction of effect for all identified loci and significance for 18 novel and for 5 interaction loci in an independent study sample. These loci highlight novel biological functions, including response to oxidative stress, addictive behaviour, and regulatory functions emphasizing the importance of accounting for environment in genetic analyses. Our results suggest that tobacco smoking may alter the genetic susceptibility to overall adiposity and body fat distribution. ; A full list of acknowledgments appears in the Supplementary Note 4.
