In standard models of decision making, participation in violent political action is understood as the product of instrumentally rational reasoning. According to this line of thinking, instrumentally rational individuals will participate in violent political action only if there are selective incentives that are limited to participants. We argue in favor of an alternate model of political violence where participants are motivated by moral commitments to collective sacred values. Correlative and experimental empirical evidence in the context of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict strongly supports this alternate view.

The agricultural sector played a very important role in Morocco during the long rule of Hassan II. Agricultural policy reflected the relationship of political forces and the capacity of agricultural elites allied to the Trône to influence decision-making processes. However, the traditional orientations of this policy have been called into question since the late 1980s by the liberalisation of international trade and the country's financial constraints. In this article, we propose to provide information on the development of this policy and the articulation of agricultural interests through the path of the Moroccan Agriculture Union (AMU). Since its establishment in 1958, this professional organisation has claimed to be a monopoly for the representation of the interests of Moroccan farmers, and thus of the rural world. In so doing, the UMA has long played the role of a genuine agricultural lobby within the various institutions of the Kingdom. If religion has been a major dimension in the construction and reconstruction of the world during the history of humanity, how is it now conceived by a very important social category in the life of modern societies? Is it possible to imagine this self-fall by Moroccan youth in particular by adopting a closed position vis-à-vis the Muslim religion in a climate of global social unease? It should be noted that this article was the result of a fieldwork carried out in 2008 with our university students. A period that we can describe can be, as an exploratory phase of what was later called the Arab Spring in 2011. ; Si la religion a constitué durant l'histoire de l'humanité une dimension principale dans la construction et de la reconstruction du monde, comment est conçu-elle aujourd'hui par une catégorie sociale très importante dans la vie des sociétés modernes ? Peut-on concevoir ce repli sur le soi par la jeunesse marocaine plus particulièrement en adoptant une position fermée vis-à-vis de la religion musulmane dans un climat de malaise social global ? Notons bien que cet article a été le fruit d'un travail de terrain mené en 2008 auprès des étudiants de l'université dont nous exerçons. International audience The economic concept of negative externalities is the dominant frame in environmental policies. Revisiting environmental damage with a sociological approach, I show how the process of externalities definition and internalisation is a political process in which a public is constituted and common problems are collectively defined and addressed. In particular, I highlight the presence in this process of two kinds of uncertainty which have to be dealt with: epistemic uncertainty and moral uncertainty. Keeping these two forms of uncertainty analytically separated is useful in order to understand the limits of the market as a way to internalize environmental externalities and to analyse in their specificities the different types of translation, mediation and composition which are needed in order to create the conditions for a truly inclusive and democratic public deliberation on environmental damage and its reparation.

the importance of internet consultation on health has given rise to comments and concerns in the medical world. Some consider that the proliferation of non-hierarchical, unvalidated information is a source of confusion, which could damage the patient's confidence in his/her doctor. The available literature tends to shift questions: there is no consensual method of measuring the quality of information and, above all, the importance of this issue is put in perspective: the collective nature of both the content produced and the internet consultation and the judgement shown by individuals guarantee against the possible effects of a lack of quality. Patients seem to seek stronger cooperation with doctors rather than conflict, and professionals adjust to this more informed patient, thus more responsive to arguments and more responsible for their behaviour. The internet could be seen as a facilitator of the relationship. This should be qualified in the case of rare or poorly known health problems, or where medication is controversial. The Internet makes it possible to build up a form of lay expertise that competes with or conflicts with the expertise of doctors, whether at individual level or even more clearly in health bodies open today to representatives of users, as part of a strengthened health democracy. ; International audience The increasingly popular practice of consulting the Internet on health issues has led to much commentary and concern in medical circles. Niedriglohnzuschüssse sollen Arbeitslose zur Aufnahme einer Beschäftigung motivieren. Allerdings enden gerade solche geförderten Beschäftigungsverhältnisse oft schon während der Förderdauer - ein Befund, der gegen die Anreizwirkung eines Lohnzuschusses spricht und damit im Widerspruch zu neoklassischen ökonomischen Theorien steht. Gerhard Krug erklärt dieses "Paradox" damit, dass die so geförderten Beschäftigten den Kombilohn nicht nur als Zuzahlung, sondern auch als ein Signal dafür wahrnehmen, dass ihr Arbeitgeber nicht bereit ist, einen "fairen" Lohn zu zahlen. Für die Ausgestaltung arbeitsmarktpolitischer Maßnahmen bedeutet dies, dass die damit verbundenen Ziele nur zu erreichen sind, wenn neben dem Motiv der finanziellen Nutzenmaximierung auch das subjektiv-normativ orientierte Handeln der Betroffenen in den Blick genommen wird.

Während in der Biografieforschung lange Zeit der Einfluss von Diskursen auf biografische Erzählungen nicht berücksichtigt wurde, wird in Diskursanalysen häufig die subjektkonstituierende Wirkung von Diskursen vernachlässigt. In diesem Beitrag soll es daher auf theoretischer Ebene um die Frage gehen, wie Diskurs und Subjekt zusammengedacht werden können. Hierzu soll das Konzept der Artikulation von Stuart HALL vorgestellt werden. Stuart HALL hat sich vor allem ab Beginn der 1990er Jahre mit Fragen der (kulturellen) Identität auseinandergesetzt und hierbei ein Subjektverständnis entwickelt, das es ermöglicht, Subjekte nicht nur als Effekte von Diskursen zu verstehen, aber dennoch Diskurse in der Subjektkonzeption zu berücksichtigen. Er wurde im deutschsprachigen Raum bisher sowohl in der Biografie- als auch in der Diskursforschung wenig rezipiert, doch sein Konzept der Artikulation könnte möglicherweise eine Brücke von der Diskurs- zur Biografieforschung schlagen und auch für empirische Arbeiten anschlussfähig gemacht werden.

Die Erzählungen von Sir Arthur CONAN DOYLE über Sherlock Holmes sind weltweit bekannt. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1993) enthalten in einer Geschichte – Silver Blaze – den folgenden Wortwechsel zwischen Holmes und einem Kommissar von Scotland Yard: Gregory (Scotland Yard): "Gibt es noch irgendetwas anderes, worauf Sie mich aufmerksam machen wollen?" Holmes: "Ja: auf das eigenartige nächtliche Ereignis mit dem Hund." Gregory: "Aber der Hund hat nachts nichts getan."
Holmes: "Das genau war das eigenartige Ereignis." In ganz ähnlicher Weise möchte ich die Aufmerksamkeit der Leser/innen auf den eigenartigen Fall des Anselm STRAUSS lenken: Es gibt bereits einige Arbeiten zu Bezügen zwischen der GTM und dem Pragmatismus von John DEWEY und Charles PEIRCE, und diese haben üblicherweise Anselm STRAUSS mit seinem durch die Chicagoer Schule beeinflussten Hintergrund in den Blick genommen. Es bleibt allerdings ein Rätsel, warum STRAUSS zu diesem Einfluss des Pragmatismus und zu dessen Potenzialen für die seit den 1960er Jahren sukzessive entwickelte Methodologie nie ausführlicher Stellung genommen hat. Ich versuche in diesem Beitrag zu zeigen, dass einige der umstrittensten Aspekte der GTM lösbar wären, würden sie im Lichte einiger Hauptgrundsätze des Pragmatismus rekapituliert, insbesondere wenn neuere Lesarten wie die von Richard RORTY hinzugezogen würden. Die Frage, die den Beitrag durchzieht, ist, warum STRAUSS trotz seines eigenen intellektuellen Hintergrunds so wenig versucht hat, Pragmatismus für die Weiterentwicklung der GTM zu nutzen. Das ist das "eigenartige Ereignis", dem immer wieder Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt werden wird, und das am Ende eventuell keine überzeugende Antwort findet, anders als das "Geheimnis", das Sherlock Holmes oben angesprochen hat.

"Südafrika hat am 22. April ein neues nationales und neue regionale Parlamente gewählt. Der regierende African National Congress (ANC) errang mit 65,9% der Stimmen erneut einen deutlichen Wahlsieg, verfehlte jedoch knapp die für Verfassungsänderungen notwendige Zweidrittelmehrheit. Zweiter Wahlgewinner ist die liberale Democratic Alliance (DA), die mit 16,7% ihren Vorsprung als größte Oppositionspartei ausbauen konnte. Als Wahlsieger in der Provinz Western Cape wird sie dort künftig die Premierministerin stellen. Die neue Oppositionspartei Congress of the People (COPE) konnte mit landesweit 7,4% lediglich einen Achtungserfolg erringen. Die hohe Wahlbeteiligung von 77,3% lässt erkennen, dass die Wahlen von vielen Südafrikanern als Ausnahmewahlen gesehen wurden. Einer der Gründe dafür war die neue Oppositionspartei COPE, eine Abspaltung des regierenden ANC. Ein weiterer Grund war der Zuma-Faktor. Mit Jacob Zuma hatte der ANC einen Spitzenkandidaten aufgestellt, der enorme Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen hat und auf viele Südafrikaner polarisierend wirkte. Trotz weit verbreiteter Unzufriedenheit mit den Leistungen der Regierung haben es Zuma und der ANC nicht zuletzt durch einen perfekt geplanten Wahlkampf vermocht, die große Mehrheit der Wähler, vor allem der unteren Einkommensgruppen, zu mobilisieren. Die neue Oppositionspartei COPE hat sich im Wahlkampf verzettelt und es nicht geschafft, landesweit eine breite Basis aufzubauen. Zum zweiten Mal seit dem Ende der Apartheid hat mit der DA eine Oppositionspartei einen alleinigen Regierungsauftrag in einer der neun Provinzen erhalten. Kleinere Oppositionsparteien haben starke Verluste hinnehmen müssen und laufen Gefahr, in die politische Bedeutungslosigkeit abzugleiten. Der ethnische Faktor hat nur in einigen Provinzen eine wichtige Rolle gespielt. So hat etwa Jacob Zumas öffentlich zur Schau getragene Zulu-Identität dazu beigetragen, dass sich die Zustimmung zum ANC in der Provinz Kwa Zulu Natal deutlich erhöht hat. Noch immer ist der 'Schwarz-Weiß'-Faktor bei der Wahlentscheidung dominant. Lediglich bei einer kleinen städtischen Minderheit scheint der Faktor Hautfarbe an Bedeutung zu verlieren." "Gender differences in access to continuing training are often argued to be a central cause of persisting gender inequalities in occupational attainment. Yet, existing empirical work has presented rather mixed evidence regarding a potential gender gap. With the aim to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying training participation, this paper carries out an empirical test of the central theoretical models commonly used to explain the (alleged) gender gap. Using data from the European Social Survey, we find that working men are more likely to train than working women, controlling for worker and job characteristics. Moreover, common theoretical approaches to understanding gendered training behaviour show some explanatory power for male workers, while they largely fail to predict women's training incidence." This article aims at explaining the clustering of economic activity using instruments of new institutional economics, taking into account well-known descriptive characteristics of the cluster, as well as recent developments in research on hybrid institutional agreements, primarily, the research conducted by Michael Porter, Claude Ménard and others.

"High-quality data from large-scale surveys provide a solid basis for outstanding research in the social sciences. Because of the unique demands of survey measurement in terms of the resources and skills required, it should be viewed as a specific sector of the research data infrastructure. In Germany, large-scale surveys have been established both within and outside academia, and major new projects are underway. Clearly, the sector is expanding. There is a need to discuss future challenges, not only with a focus on individual large projects, but with a view to the sector of large-scale survey measurement in general. One aspect is the segmentation of large-scale survey measurement in Germany along institutional lines (statistical offices, ministerial or government agency research (Ressortforschung), public research institutions, and the academic community). Here, we recommend that an overall framework be developed covering all sub-sectors. A second aspect is the infrastructure required for largescale, high-quality data collection. In Germany (outside the sector of Statistical Offices), this infrastructure is provided by private survey organisations. We argue that these should be recognised as relevant actors within the research data infrastructure. They have to invest in technological and human resources in order to provide the professional services required, and they need conditions and forms of cooperation that encourage this investment." "Record linkage is used for preparing sampling frames, deduplication of lists and combining information on the same object from two different databases. If the identifiers of the same objects in two different databases have error free unique common identifiers like personal identification numbers (PID), record linkage is a simple file merge operation. If the identifiers contain errors, record linkage is a challenging task. In many applications, the files have widely different numbers of observations, for example a few thousand records of a sample survey and a few million records of an administrative database of social security numbers.
