Abstract

The book at hand may be regarded as yet another tribute to the recent theoretical debates over the essence and application of the concepts of security, borders and regions. Still, its focus on security in border regions gives it a special relevance in the context of nation building and region building processes underway in Northern and Eastern europe, as far as border areas remain the points of confrontation between the rules, norms and regulations imposed by a variety of authorities with overlapping jurisdictions. As the old barriers are dismantled and new dividing lines are constructed across Europe, issues interconnecting borders and security attract a growing attention on the part of both theorists and practitioners. This volume attempts to bring about a dialogue across borders - an open debate cutting across previous divides in a scholarly, geographical and cultural sense. The book itself has become possible as a result of collaboration between scholars from Denmrak, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Russia, UK, and USA, who aim at discussing future agendas and providing policy ideas for many problematic issues in the region that yet await reasonable solutions.
