This article discusses the factors affecting a student's engagement in the classroom. Student predispositions toward work are examined, and four work orientations are described. It is concluded that the traditional educational environment is conducive to only one of the four orientations. Suggestions are given for developing pedagogies that appeal to students of each orientation.
