Underground water is extracted by wells that are connected through underground canals. Thus, the levels of pollutant elements in ground water could be evaluated directly from water samples collected from the wells. This study was conducted in the city of Samara / Salah-Aldeen province – Iraq. The samples were taken from 29wells within the study area for the period 2012-2014 with a supervision from the General Authority for Groundwater / the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources. GIS technology was adopted to calculate the pollution elements at Samara water table. The concentrations of chemical elements [K, Na, Mg, Cl, Ca] and compounds [SO4, HCO3] were manipulated and calculated for the entire area. The results of laboratory analyses showed that the groundwater in this area is not suitable for use as drinking water for humans, since the concentrations of the chemical elements and the compounds exceeded the permissible limits and are not in accordance with WHO standards. However, the results also indicated that the groundwater in the covered area is suitable for agriculture irrigation.

For all its importance to the Green Revolution, groundwater is India's most valuable and vulnerable natural resource. This is especially true in Punjab and Haryana, two of India's most agriculturally advanced states. Between 2004 and 2017, groundwater levels in Punjab and Haryana fell by 7 and 5 m, respectively. This study aims to evaluate regional groundwater extraction trends and assess the productivity of groundwater irrigation for rice and wheat, the two most significant crops in Punjab and Haryana. The results indicate significant disparities in groundwater irrigation and economic productivity in both inter-state and intra-state settings.

Human-induced afforestation has been one of the main policies for environmental management of farmland abandonment in Mediterranean areas. Over the last decades, several studies have reviewed the impact of afforestation activities on geomorphological and hydrological responses and soil properties, although few studies have evaluated the effects on water table dynamics. In parallel to human-induced afforestation activities, natural revegetation occurred in abandoned fields and in fields where the intensity of human activity declined, driving the expansion of shrubs. This research addresses the spatial and temporal variability of water table dynamics in a small afforested sub-catchment located in the Central Spanish Pyrenees. Differences between afforestation (Pinus nigra and Pinus sylvestris) and natural plant colonization (shrubs, mainly Genista scorpius, Buxus sempervirens, and Juniperus communis) and early abandoned meadows (G. scorpius), are analysed in terms of runoff generation and seasonal water table depth dynamics. Precipitation, runoff and water table datasets recorded for the 2014–2019 period are used. Results show a high temporal and spatial variability with large fluctuations in discharge and water table. Groundwater dynamics varied markedly over the year, identifying a wet and dry period with different responses suggesting different runoff generation processes (Hortonian flow during dry and wet periods, and saturation excess runoff during wet conditions). Furthermore, important differences are noted among the various land cover types: (i) in the natural revegetation area (shrubland and meadows) a marked seasonal cycle was observed with short saturation periods during winter and spring; and (ii) in the afforestation areas, the water table dynamics showed a seasonal cycle with a high variability, with fast responses and rapid oscillations. Wassersättigung und anoxische Bedingungen verringern die Mineralisation der organischen Substanzen in Mooren und dennoch sind sie als Quellen der klimarelevanten Gase CH4 und CO2 bekannt. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit bestand darin, den Einfluss von wechselnden Wasserständen und unterschiedlichen Torfqualitäten auf mikrobielle Mineralisationsprozesse in Torf bis zu einer Tiefe von 40 cm zu untersuchen. Ein schneller und einfacher Torfqualitätsindex wurde erstellt, um das Treibhausgaspotential des Torfes widerspiegeln zu können. Dazu wurde die thermische Zersetzbarkeit der Torfproben mit der anaeroben Bildung von CO2 und CH4 verglichen. Im Allgemeinen waren die Raten für Exoenzyaktivitäten und Fe(III)-Reduktion sowie CO2- und CH4-Bildung in den oberen 10 cm des Torfes erhöht. Torf nahe der Oberfläche wies einen hohen Qualitätsindex und einen erhöhten Anteil von kohlenhydrat- und ligninhaltiger pflanzlicher Biomasse auf. Obwohl eine Abnahme der Fe(III)-Reduktionsraten mit ansteigender Tiefe beobachtet werden konnte, waren die Abundanzen der kultivierten Fe(III)-Reduzierer über die Tiefe nahezu konstant. Die mikrobiellen Fe(II)-Oxidationsraten waren im Vergleich zur chemischen Oxidation um das 1,5-fache erhöht und entstandene Fe(III)-oxide wiesen eine feinkörnigere Struktur auf. Die erwartete Zunahme von Dürre- und Starkregenereignissen scheint in diesem Moortyp zu keiner verstärkten Mineralisierung der organischen Substanz zu führen, da eine hohe Wasserhaltekapazität des Torfes eine schnelle Austrocknung während schwankender Wasserstände verhindert, Mikroorganismen in der mikrobiell aktivsten oberen Torfschicht an oxische Bedingungen angepasst zu sein scheinen und tiefere Schichten trotz erhöhter Exoenzymaktivität zu keiner wesentlichen CO2-Bildung beigetragen haben. Dennoch, die Anreicherung von Nitrat, Fe(III) und Sulfat im Torfkörper, sollte in einer verstärkten mikrobiellen Nutzung dieser alternativen Elektronenakzeptoren resultieren.

Local and regional governments in The Netherlands are increasingly faced with the question how to adjust and optimize groundwater table conditions in urban areas to minimize ongoing subsidence and its consequences. To help addressing this question, a model was developed that includes soft-soil deformation by creep. In this paper, a study is presented in which the model was used to investigate and intercompare the effectiveness of measures that (a) prevent anomalous water table drop during a drought, (b) suppress the seasonal variability of the water table, and (c) involve a permanent rise of the mean water table.
