Fuel conservation strategies are used by airlines with the objective of making their operations more efficient, whether it is from an economical or environmental point of view. This dissertation focuses only on the vertical profile of the cruise phase of long haul commercial flights. Covering legislation, operational standards, communications, surveillance, flight planning and performance aspects. After a description of the previous aspects, the first case study is presented. This case study consists in a comparison between a usual vertical profile of a flight and an optimized one. First a theoretical estimation of the results is presented and then the detailed calculations for the actual flight are described, continuing with an explanation of several factors associated with the results. A summary of a second case study is presented to allow for a comparison between two vertical profile optimization procedures. ; Estratégias de otimização de combustível são utilizadas pelas companhias aéreas com o objectivo de tornar as suas operações mais eficientes, quer seja do ponto de vista ambiental, quer económico. Existem diversas estratégias para tornar as operações mais eficientes, podendo ser aplicadas em qualquer fase do voo. Nesta dissertação o foco vai centrar-se na aplicação destas técnicas na fase de cruzeiro do voo e focando apenas o perfil vertical do mesmo. É feita uma descrição da legislação aplicável à fase de cruzeiro do voo, falando de distâncias de separação mínimas, dos procedimentos operacionais, das ferramentas de comunicação e vigilância. É também apresentado o modo de construção de um plano de voo e por fim alguns pormenores sobre desempenho. Depois da descrição destes pormenos importantes à realização de um voo, é apresentado o primeiro caso de estudo, descrevendo as ferramentas necessárias, tanto em terra como a bordo, à realização dos voos de teste. Por fim são explicados vários factores que estão associados aos resultados, que são também apresentados e explicados. Um resumo de um segundo caso de estudo é posteriormente apresentado de modo a permitir a comparação entre dois procedimentos de otimização de perfis verticais.

In this work, the effect of the aerosol vertical distribution on the local shortwave aerosol radiative forcing is studied. We computed the radiative forcing at the top and bottom of the atmosphere between 0.2 and 4 microns using the libRadTran package and compared the results with those provided by AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork). Lidar measurements were employed to characterize the aerosol vertical profile, and collocated AERONET measurements provided aerosol optical parameters required to calculate its radiative forcing. A good correlation between the calculated radiative forcings and those provide by AERONET, with differences smaller than 1 W m-2 (15% of estimated radiative forcing), is obtained when a gaussian vertical aerosol profile is assumed. Notwithstanding, when a measured aerosol profile is inserted into the model, differences between radiative forcings can vary up to 6.54Wm-2 (15%), with a mean of differences =-0.74±3.06W m-2 at BOA and -3.69Wm-2 (13%), with a mean of differences = -0.27±1.32Wm-2 at TOA due to multiple aerosol layers and aerosol types. The Publisher apologized for any inconvenience this may cause. </strong></p><p>The contaminants present in the atmosphere have a substantial impact on public health. Among contaminants, the most important are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This paper is focused on the possibility of continuous PAHs monitoring and the description of their vertical distribution using filters, which serve to purify the air before the determination of the greenhouse gases (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, CO, ozone) and Hg in air, continuously sampled at 8, 50 and 230m at the atmospheric station Krešín near Pacov and elaboration of a simple and economical method of extraction of these filters. The station serves as a point for monitoring the occurrence and remote transport of greenhouse gases and selected atmospheric pollutants and for the measurements of basic meteorological characteristics. In December, 17, 2014, a sampling of 16 priority PAHs started and lasted until December, 9, 2015. Samples were taken approximately once a month. The maximum concentration of ΣPAHs was 15.905 ng/m³, measured at the height of 8 meters in the period of 11. 2. 2015–11. 3. 2015, the concentration of benzo[a]pyrene exceeded the immission limit in the period by more than 50%. By the sampling, the hypothesis about decreasing concentration of PAHs with increasing height was confirmed, especially the decrease of heavier PAHs. The sampling has shown that it is highly desirable to use the meteorological tower for sampling of PAHs using PTFE filters either by including the active sampler itself, or by using pre-filters for tropospheric ozone and gaseous elemental mercury analysers.</p>

This paper presents an extensive intercomparison and validation for the ozone (O3) product measured by the two Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometers (IASIs) launched on board the MetOp-A and MetOp-B satellites in 2006 and in 2012 respectively. IASI O3 total columns and vertical profiles obtained from Fast Optimal Retrievals on Layers for IASI (FORLI) v20140922 software (running up until recently) are validated against independent observations during the period 2008-2014 on a global scale. On average for the period 2013-2014, IASI-A and IASI-B total ozone columns (TOCs) retrieved using FORLI are consistent, with IASI-B providing slightly lower values with a global difference of only 0.2±0.8%. The comparison between IASI-A and IASI-B O3 vertical profiles shows differences within ±2% over the entire altitude range. Global validation results for 7 years of IASI TOCs from FORLI against the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2 (GOME-2) launched on board MetOp-A and Brewer-Dobson data show that, on average, IASI overestimates the ultraviolet (UV) data by 5-6% with the largest differences found in the southern high latitudes. The comparison with UV-visible SAOZ (Système d'Analyse par Observation Zénithale) measurements shows a mean bias between IASI and SAOZ TOCs of 2-4% in the midlatitudes and tropics and 7% at the polar circle. Part of the discrepancies found at high latitudes can be attributed to the limited information content in the observations due to low brightness temperatures. The comparison with ozonesonde vertical profiles (limited to 30km) shows that on average IASI with FORLI processing underestimates O3 by ∼ 5-15% in the troposphere while it overestimates O3 by ∼ 10-40% in the stratosphere, depending on the latitude. The largest relative differences are found in the tropical tropopause region; this can be explained by the low O3 amounts leading to large relative errors. none ; 3 ; no ; 210Pb and 137Cs vertical profiles in coastal sediments are studied using a sedimentation-mixing model. The cores were sampled in a complex coastal area characterized by the presence of different impact sources and environmental uses (riverine inputs, commercial and military harbour, marine protected area) in the Eastern Ligurian Sea, Italy. The analysis of accumulation and dispersion processes is performed using a numerical advection and diffusion model, in terms of the independent variables - time and mass depth. The flux of 210Pb is considered in steady state while the time dependent input flux of 137Cs is estimated from the concentration of this radionuclide in seawater, starting from observed data from 1960 to date. Differently from the atmospheric fallout distribution, this input function contains, at least partly, the contribution that still continues to reach the sediment in the last 25 years as a result of coastal and riverine input. The analysis highlights some features obscured in experimental data, and allows comparison of the effects of different scenarios. The specific effect of a pulsed input is discussed by analysing the effects of the Chernobyl event. The effects of mass flux in non–steady state are also considered: we observe that since the pulsed inputs in 137Cs are now too old, a strong superficial mixing and a time-variable flux produce similar profiles for both radionuclides. 30 pags., 13 figs., 4 tabs. ; We present the inter-comparison of delta slant column densities (SCDs) and vertical profiles of nitrous acid (HONO) derived from measurements of different multiaxis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAXDOAS) instruments and using different inversion algorithms during the Second Cabauw Inter-comparison campaign for Nitrogen Dioxide measuring Instruments (CINDI- 2) in September 2016 at Cabauw, the Netherlands (51.97° N, 4.93° E). The HONO vertical profiles, vertical column densities (VCDs), and near-surface volume mixing ratios are compared between different MAX-DOAS instruments and profile inversion algorithms for the first time. Systematic and random discrepancies of the HONO results are derived from the comparisons of all data sets against their median values. Systematic discrepancies of HONO delta SCDs are observed in the range of ±0:3×1015 molec. cm2, which is half of the typical random discrepancy of 0:6× 1015 molec. cm2. For a typical high HONO delta SCD of 2×1015 molec. cm2, the relative systematic and random discrepancies are about 15% and 30 %, respectively. The inter-comparison of HONO profiles shows that both systematic and random discrepancies of HONO VCDs and nearsurface volume mixing ratios (VMRs) are mostly in the range of ∼ ±0:5×1014 molec. cm2 and ∼ ±0:1 ppb (typically ∼ 20 %). Further we find that the discrepancies of the retrieved HONO profiles are dominated by discrepancies of the HONO delta SCDs. The profile retrievals only contribute to the discrepancies of the HONO profiles by ∼ 5 %. However, some data sets with substantially larger discrepancies than the typical values indicate that inappropriate implementations of profile inversion algorithms and configurations of radiative transfer models in the profile retrievals can also be an important uncertainty source. In addition, estimations of measurement uncertainties of HONO dSCDs, which can significantly impact profile retrievals using the optimal estimation method, need to consider not only DOAS fit errors, but also atmospheric variability, especially for an instrument with a DOAS fit error lower than ∼ 3×1014 molec. cm2. The MAX-DOAS results during the CINDI-2 campaign indicate that the peak HONO levels (e.g. near-surface VMRs of ∼ 0:4 ppb) often appeared in the early morning and below 0.2 km. The near-surface VMRs retrieved from the MAXDOAS observations are compared with those measured using a co-located long-path DOAS instrument. The systematic differences are smaller than 0.15 and 0.07 ppb during early morning and around noon, respectively. Since true HONO values at high altitudes are not known in the absence of real measurements, in order to evaluate the abilities of profile inversion algorithms to respond to different HONO profile shapes, we performed sensitivity studies using synthetic HONO delta SCDs simulated by a radiative transfer model with assumed HONO profiles. The tests indicate that the profile inversion algorithms based on the optimal estimation method with proper configurations can reproduce the different HONO profile shapes well. This PhD dissertation focuses on the characterization of atmospheric aerosols properties during day- and night-time combining active and passive remote sensing measurements. The study provides both column-integrated and vertically resolved aerosol properties. The key for this thesis is the combination of advanced ground-based remote sensing instrumentation. By one hand, it is used a multiwavelength Raman lidar that which measures both elastic and Raman signals, therefore, independent backscatter and extinction profiles can be calculated. The system operates twice a week in the frame of ACTRISE - ARLINET (Aerosols, Clouds, and Trace gases Research InfraStructure Network - European Aerosol Research LIdar NETwork) and more intensively during special field campaigns. But due to the low signal-to-noise ratio Raman measurements are only available during night-time, being the daytime measurements based on the use of multiwavelength elastic measurements. Additionally, continuous measurements during the entire year have been registered with a ceilometer in the infrared range. Finally, sun/sky photometry was used to obtain direct estimation of aerosol optical properties during daytime and lunar photometry for direct estimation of spectral aerosol optical depths during night-time. ; Tesis Univ.
