Rachel Schmidt had absolutely no experience with radio broadcasting, but when she was offered a chance to host a show for the new ASUW Student Station, she couldn't pass up the opportunity! She and Tara Sweeney (her equally inexperienced roommate and fellow Junior in UW's Honors Program) put their heads together and fleshed out plans for an hour long show entitled, 'A Look Around: An International Hour focused on events, people, and cultures from around the globe." Beginning in January of the Spring 2010 semester and wrapping up in late April, A Look Around aired twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 4pm at UWSR.org. Influenced by their courses of study, the co-hosts made it the mission of their program to seek out and relate international current events and histories. They interviewed several foreign students and faculty, as well as those native to the US who had travelled abroad. Additionally, they conveyed aspects of culture – music/films, religion, and social justice issues. Much was discovered of world politics, entertainment, and antiquity (and the role of the U.S.), as well as the technicalities of news distribution.

War correspondents covered World War II for a variety of news agencies in conjunction with the United States military. As with any piece of writing, the views of these men often found expression in their work. My initial research, untaken in Historical Methods 3020 during the spring 2010 semester, was aimed at examining the work of war correspondent Norman Paige in order to determine his views of the Japanese, and if these views reflected public opinion about and an Orientalist perspective of them. I then chose to continue this research for my senior project for the Honors Program by expanding my examination to the work of four other war correspondents operating at the same time as Paige, Richard Tregaskis, Robert Sherrod, Noel Busch, and Ernie Pyle. I then compared the work of these men and Paige to American public opinion, which I established by examining New York Times articles, propaganda posters, and though an interview with a woman who lived at the time, and to the concept of Orientalism put forward by Edward Said in his book of the same name. This examination and comparison led me to conclude that these correspondents expressed a mainly negative view of the Japanese in their work, which reflected public opinion about and an Orientalist perspective of them.

Since the Justice and Development Party (AKP) has come to power in 2002, Turkey's foreign policy has changed its relations with the Middle East. Turkey is becoming a significant player in all regions of the world because it has taken on the role of mediator between western-centered States such as Israel and Shia-centered States such as Iran. Moreover, its reputation as a functioning Islamic democracy is a model for Egypt who is currently going through a leadership and government revolution. The focus of this paper is to discuss Turkey's foreign policy toward Israel, Iran and Egypt under the AKP party and discuss Turkey's diplomatic role as mediator in guiding the actions of Israeli, Iranian and Egyptian governments. Turkey's foreign policy and the major events that have shaped relations with each country will be discussed in order to understand the level of diplomatic power the AKP has obtained. The foreign policies and actions that the AKP have developed since elected have allowed it to balance relationships with the world and given it the power to dictate rules within Middle Eastern issues because of its popularity among these countries who have invested interests in the ideals and goals of the AKP.

In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt enacted the Good Neighbor Policy, which was based on the principles of non-intervention and non-interference in the domestic affairs of Latin America. With the growing threat of war with Germany and the expansion of Nazi influence in Latin American nations, it was imperative for the United States to protect the Western Hemisphere from this impending peril. With the implementation of the Good Neighbor Policy, the United States embarked on a campaign to promote hemispheric solidarity by transforming both the image of the United States abroad and the representation of Latin Americans particularly on film. Hollywood quickly became involved with the government's defense efforts. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact that U.S. foreign policy had on Latin American stardom. An analysis of the films The Three Caballeros, Down Argentine Way, and several episodes from the I Love Lucy television series as well as an investigation of the experiences of Carmen Miranda and Desi Arnaz reveal that while the objective of Hollywood's Good Neighbor Policy was to reconstruct perception of Latin Americans, the Latin American stereotypes were only slightly altered while the featured films continued to fall into line with American imperialism. This study acknowledges the United States' historically inaccurate portrayal of Latin America specifically through film, and helps to raise awareness persisting inaccuracies in the present day motion picture industry.

Contact theory argues increased interaction between social groups will help prejudicial attitudes and alleviate racial and ethnic divisions. Contact theory has become the framework for integrated education in Northern Ireland promoting reconciliation, positive change, and equality by bringing Protestant and Catholic children and staff together. Continued political violence and sectarianism, Northern Ireland is in need of holistic mechanisms to promote reconciliation; religiously integrated schools are part of this process. This study is a qualitative analysis of the effectiveness of integrated education in Northern Ireland, limitations of contact theory, and the role of education in promoting reconciliation in post-conflict societies.

In a current culture where the public eye heavily criticizes the federal government's accrual of debt, what can be said of an individual's debt accumulation? What variables affect the changes in aggregate consumer debt? Common thought has been that as interest rates decrease, consumers are attracted to increase their borrowing because it becomes cheaper (interest payments decrease). As true as this observation is, the significance of this effect hasn't been measured against other variables associated with debt. For example, when comparing the effect of interest rates against the effects of unemployment rates on total national measures of consumer debt, credit card debt, non-credit card debt, and mortgage debt the latter variable inflicts more impact on the metrics. The significant effect of unemployment rates on the aforementioned debt measurements was evident after conducting multivariable regressions on the selected data. Understanding the significance of this effect provides insight into national debt dynamics, thus providing useful tools in deciding economic policy.

The small town of Eden is located in the Eden Valley in southwest Wyoming. This small community, located in a semi-arid high desert region, consists mainly of agriculture. Growers in the area produce primarily Alfalfa for livestock fodder. Due to the semi-arid climate and sandy soil conditions, salt runoff into the Colorado River through irrigation caused problems prior to the 1980's. The government established a program at this time to encourage Eden Valley farmers to change from flood to center pivot irrigation. Several growers did make the switch to center-pivot irrigation from flood irrigation system in order to minimize salt leaching from runoff waters as well as to conserve water. The research objective was to analyze the effect of the switch from flood to center pivot irrigation on crop growth through the use of Remote Sensing. Remote sensing has been used as a successful tool to analyze management practices in agricultural operations. Crop growth in a 140 acre of alfalfa grass mixture field in the Eden Valley was analyzed before (1984, 1985 and 1987) and after (1991-1993) the center-pivot irrigation system was installed. Landsat images acquired prior to the first harvest in these years were used to identify crop growth based on very high to very low vigor. This information was then used to compare the effect of center-pivot irrigation system on crop growth.

Beginning in the late 19th century, Zionism – the desire by Jews for a Jewish homeland – began to emerge as a dominating geopolitical movement. By the time Israel gained statehood in 1948, Zionism's definition expanded to encapsulate competing Jewish and Christian theologies, as well as ethnic and political philosophies. I argue that religious Zionism has permeated the political discourse and created an American Zionism that creates a view of the Middle East that influences the way Americans talk about Israel, Arabs, and Muslims. This paper argues it is important for Americans to understand a movement that dictates how their government spends billions of dollars every year, as well as how the government dictates foreign policy toward the Middle East. Contained is a brief history of Zionism, as well as an overview of the theological views of Christians who wholeheartedly support Israel. I use Interviews with local Christian Zionists, as well as excerpts from online message boards to provide insight to the way the average American Zionist discusses the Middle East in ways that mirror the ways Evangelical Christians discuss the end of the world.

Despite the coincidence of the so-called "British Renaissance" of classical music and the First World War, two events central to British cultural development at the turn of the century, little research exists regarding their interrelation. Using primary and secondary documents found in Laramie and London, this project seeks partly to fill that gap, examining two choral works which served as their respective composer's reactions to WWI. Gustav Holst's "Ode to Death" and Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Dona Nobis Pacem" were both analyzed for motivic, formal, and orchestrational means used in settings of war-related texts. Additionally, biographical information and correspondences were used to provide context for the works and to elucidate opinions and emotions the composers had toward the war and its affiliated issues, including violence, politics, and the spirituality of mortality. These feelings were complex and occasionally contradictory. A variety of musical means were found to be used to communicate these nuanced opinions; the composers' perspectives defy such restrictive designations as "pacifist" or "hawkish," and these pieces reflect this.

Campus diversity has been at the center of debate and reforming efforts across the United States for several decades. At the University of Wyoming, programs and resources exist to support those who are affected by gender, race, and sexual orientation; and the macro level of campus culture looks to incorporate acceptance and tolerance of diversity. However, race, gender, and sexual orientation can be restricting elements that discourage interaction. Many students come into contact with gender, race, and sexual orientation during college, but struggle to overcome obstacles in understanding one another. My research focuses on the specifics of these boundaries and the extent they affect our personal interactions with one another. Through discussion of the current diversity we may come to know how best to overcome the related problems. How do we resolve these tensions? Can students learn to identify with others across gender, race, and sexual orientation? Should more be done to celebrate diversity at the University of Wyoming? What is the administration's, faculty's, and student government's role in shaping the discussion of these topics? These are just a few of the topics explored in surveys, interviews, and focus groups and my talk will summarize the conclusions reached by those who engaged with this topic.

In the past several years, a movement to find a cleaner, more efficient and renewable energy source has become increasingly popular. Oil prices are unstable and rising to a never before seen high. Consumers are becoming more and more concerned with the carbon footprint they may be leaving behind due to the use of traditional energy resources. The rising emissions concern in conjunction with the rising energy costs has promoted private and government funding of the research and development of biofuels in order to find a safer, cleaner, and more readily available renewable energy resource. This project deals with the feasibility of a biodiesel plant with the capability to produce over 50000 pounds per hour of biodiesel from a corn stover biomass via a furfural intermediate. For simplification, the process has been broken down into three sections: corn stover to furfural, furfural to 2-methylfuran, and 2-methyfuran to biodiesel. The process along with a proposed power plant was simulated using Aspen Plus. Through an economic analysis preformed on the plant it was found to be profitable.

Drug abuse in the United States is a continuously growing and morphing problem which provides many different challenges for policy makers and law enforcement officials. With a large number of people in the U.S. using some type of drug, children are being exposed to these drugs more and more as well. Children are especially vulnerable not only in their physical state, but also their emotional state in these crucial developmental years. Starting from the prenatal stage, all the way through to adulthood, there are major consequences to exposing children to drugs. Due to the wide use and abuse of drugs in the United States, a whole new class of individuals has been created, drug endangered children. Currently, law enforcement officials in Wyoming are forced to stretch other statutes to fit the definition of a drug endangered child. Wyoming needs to add a clear drug endangered child definition to state legislation in order to better protect the children in the state.

Since language is not real, but in a Lacanian sense, a re-presentation, its ability to create a reality is critically questionable. If it is the case that the real does not exist because it precedes language and cannot be subject to languages' symbolic construction, then we must challenge those communications that claim the opposite. Specifically, the government-sponsored media that depends upon the ability to convert 'real events' into symbolic currency, wasted in the endless pursuit of fantastical desires. When the 'skies are seeded with terror,' it is the task of rational people to divorce our reality from the real, to imagine the event prior to its symbolization, to interrogate the event of its being. To talk about the consequences of 9/11 precisely demonstrates the difference between the real and symbolic orders. One could consider the events of the day, or their interpretation through 'effects.' The primary symbol that will be examined in this paper is the collapsing of the three WTC towers. Considering the terrorist event itself was a media spectacle, to recognize the fiction of 9/11 is the task of this paper, to divorce the symbol, and its spectacular fiction from its reality.

The objective of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between adult bi-polar disorder and/or schizophrenia and instances of hunger or of cutting back of food. Many factors contribute to the hardship of individuals with mental illness and hunger can be one of them. Hunger is an occurrence that many individuals overlook in the United States. Secondary data is used from the Inter-University Consortium Political and Social Research 20240 Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys 2001-2003. We expect that a moderate link will exist between these individuals with these DSM-IV diagnosed mental disorders and the occurrence of household reduction of food.

The Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity has commissioned a team of four students from the University of Wyoming to develop an improved exhaust brake for the US Army. The current exhaust brake is a butterfly valve located in the exhaust stream which when closed provides back pressure and a braking effect on the engine. When descending steep grades this provides vehicle operators with more control and extends the life of traditional friction brakes. The current exhaust brake is corroding and seizing at a rate of approximately four times per engine life of 1,000,000 miles. This creates much waste and unnecessary difficulty and danger for United States military personnel. To improve the brake, key components of the butterfly valve have been replaced with corrosion resistant stainless steel parts and stainless steel bushings have been shrink-fit into the housing. The stainless steels selected were chosen to minimize the probability of galling, the magnitude of thermal stresses, and galvanic corrosion. To ensure proper operation and modeling of the improved brake, ambient temperature, thermal shock, corrosion, cyclic operation, and mechanical loading tests were performed. With these alterations the exhaust brake is designed to last the life of the engine with minimal maintenance.
