Résumé Des dispositifs d'aide à la recherche d'emploi ont été créés il y a une vingtaine d'années. Les pratiques professionnelles des conseillers ne sont pas sans évoquer celles des guérisseurs qui, pour aider le malchanceux à reprendre confiance en lui, doivent avant tout croire en leur pouvoir.

Depuis plus d'un siècle, malgré des contextes variables, des hommes et des femmes s'investissent avec conviction et technicité dans le « traitement social de la question sociale » ; et certains en font même profession depuis le début du XX e siècle. Il s'agit pour eux d'œuvrer efficacement, au travers d'organisations idoines, à la transformation des conditions sociales d'existence de leurs concitoyens et des représentations de ces conditions sociales. Cet article analyse les spécificités de ce traitement social. Il en précise d'abord les frontières puis en caractérise les acteurs et les configurations pour l'action. Partant de l'hypothèse que « le social c'est du travail », il cherche ensuite à percer la structure de ce travail du social, en distinguant notamment entre travail matériel et travail discursif, ainsi qu'à en comprendre les modes de fonctionnement et l'historicité.

La crise a révélé des valeurs, des manières de penser et d'agir qui habituellement effleurent à la surface du social. La vieillesse et son portrait schématisé ont généré des réactions agrégées aux deux pôles de l'axe affectif, révélant la relation singulière entretenue avec elle. L'idée d'un confinement déterminé selon l'âge a été portée par des acteurs politiques, des personnalités et la vox populi médiatisée. Considérer les personnes âgées comme un groupe singulier, homogène et dissociable du reste de la société ouvre sur un questionnement éthique, politique et social. Inactivité, inutilité et vulnérabilité seront interrogées. Si toutes les crises conduisent à la crainte de conflits sociaux, l'annonce d'une guerre des générations a joué pleinement ce rôle. Les contraintes et pénuries provoquent des frustrations, des pertes portant atteinte à la qualité de vie et questionnant les modalités d'arbitrage. En situation syndémique, les personnes âgées se sont retrouvées au croisement de deux épidémies, le Covid‑19 et le vieillissement de la population, qui en a toutes les caractéristiques avec ses symptômes bruyants, innommables et innombrables, et sa place entre imaginaire social et réalité contemporaine : la maladie et la mort, la peur, la relégation, l'affrontement, le bouc émissaire…

L'article présente les principaux concepts de la sociologie pragmatique à partir d'une réflexion sur l'incertitude inhérente à la vie sociale et d'une opposition entre moments pratiques et moments réflexifs. Les moments pratiques désignent les situations où les acteurs sont immergés dans l'action collective et agissent comme si tout allait de soi en fermant les yeux sur les éventuels écarts de conduite. Par contraste, les moments réflexifs (ou métapragmatiques) correspondent aux situations où ce que les acteurs sont en train de faire ne va plus de soi, ce qui ouvre un espace d'incertitude. Ces moments réflexifs peuvent alors déboucher sur deux types d'opération : la confirmation (qui vise à apaiser l'inquiétude en confirmant ce qui est) ou bien la critique (qui vise à mettre en doute les évidences communes en les mettant à l'épreuve de la réalité). Par exemple, une cérémonie met en scène une opération de confirmation, alors qu'un scandale constitue une opération critique.

En France, le débat social récent essaie de conjurer les risques d'une trop grande dépendance réciproque entre parents et jeunes adultes. Pour y parvenir, les solidarités publiques sont mises à contribution. En Italie, l'analyse de cette situation reste plutôt axée sur le rôle joué par la famille. Le débat italien fait peu intervenir le champ politique. Pourtant, et c'est tout le paradoxe, la littérature sociologique sur les jeunes adultes et leurs familles d'origine est bien plus ancienne et riche qu'en France, et les facteurs pouvant déclencher un débat social sur ces thèmes sont plus lourds et plus nombreux.

All the categories have a social origin insofar as they are based on a socially produced frame, but categorizations are always put to the test of the world's materiality through our experiences. This thesis presupposes that autism's reality is the object of a continual and collective process of reassertion and revision. Why designating autism as a medical diagnosis? It is autism as the object of a human knowledge, which makes of it a socially produced reality, that becomes analyzable by the sociologist. To characterize autism as a medical diagnosis indicates that the purpose of this thesis is to grasp the continual and practical accomplishment of autism's categorization. This thesis relies methodologically on an ethnographical approach, and theoretically on the pragmatic sociology, to propose a sociological study of medical diagnosis from the case of autism. The first part deals with diagnosis as a category and aims at showing how this category is caught in different socio-political stakes. These socio-political stakes are highlighted through distinguishing four dimensions that shape the diagnosis of autism: its institution, its institutionalization, its politicization and its controversy. Theses dimensions permit to understand the stakes that shape diagnosis in the medical world and beyond. This part shows how diagnosis as a category is constructed at the crossroads of several logics that circulate in different worlds, through power relations between different kinds of actors, in a configuration that is likely to evolve over time.
