Des théories du complot aux conspirationnismes

International audience ; Les « théories du complot » font l'objet d'une attention croissante, elles nourrissent une préoccupation politique, et également pédagogique, tout particulièrement depuis les attentats de janvier et de novembre 2015, où des lectures conspirationnistes des événements ont essaimé sur les réseaux sociaux avant même que les premiers éléments d'enquête n'aient été rassemblés.Quelle que soit l'importance des autres composantes du problème, il nous semble que les théories du complot posent, en outre, des questions intéressantes à l'épistémologie, comprise aussi bien comme théorie générale de la connaissance, selon le sens anglo-saxon, que comme philosophie des sciences. Les théories du complot – qu'il vaudrait sans doute mieux appeler « arguments complotistes » pour ne pas reprendre un usage relâché du terme technique de « théorie » – semblent imiter l'enquête scientifique, par leur insistance sur l'élucidation de causes cachées permettant d'expliquer les phénomènes visibles, alors qu'elles n'en offrent souvent qu'un douteux avatar.

Les causes de l'adhésion aux théories du complot
International audience ; Pourquoi des individus adhèrent-ils à des théories du complot ? La capacité de persuasion des leaders conspirationnistes ou la prétendue crédulité des adeptes du complotisme sont insuffisantes à rendre compte de cette adhésion. L'adhésion s'appuie, dans l'esprit des individus, sur de « bonnes raisons de croire » (Raymond Boudon). On peut distinguer deux types de causes. D'une part, des causes générales, structurelles, qui expliquent une réceptivité plus grande de nos contemporains aux idées conspirationnistes : en premier lieu la perte de confiance dans les « informations officielles », qu'elles soient politiques, scientifiques ou médiatiques, mais aussi le rôle d'Internet dans la diffusion de savoirs alternatifs. D'autre part, des causes spécifiques, idéologiques, expliquent que des individus adhèrent à telle théorie du complot plutôt qu'à telle autre. Un rapprochement sera fait avec les rumeurs et les croyances superstitieuses.

Les touristes italiens qui effarouchent les pigeons ramiers en les empêchant de se poser sur les châtaigneraies ? Les voisins de la commune d'à côté, avec leurs « battues et contre-battues » printanières ? Les jeunes du village qui déchargent leur fusil sur n'importe quoi ? Dans l'imaginaire insulaire, chez les derniers représentants de la chasse « traditionnelle », la raréfaction de certaines espèces se traduit par une véritable théorie du complot. À l'origine de la « dénaturation » de l'île, perçue comme le signe avant-coureur d'une apocalypse culturelle, on trouve toujours l'Autre.

Résumé L'objectif de cet article est de comprendre la puissance de l'imaginaire conspirationniste qui agit sur la sociologie critique. Pour clarifier cette puissance, nous allons, en introduisant les débats autour du travail sociologique de P. Bourdieu, dégager d'abord la raison pour laquelle la sociologie critique et rationnelle est susceptible d'être tombée dans le complotisme. Ensuite, nous allons étudier certaines des conditions sociales qui sont favorables à la production de la théorie du complot. Celle-ci ne s'efface pas dans la société contemporaine prétendue rationnalisée, car l'imaginaire du complot continue d'exercer sa force négative sur la vie sociale. Ce que la théorie du complot nous démontre finalement, c'est un réenchantement négatif du monde.
