This book opens the series with a consideration of the social construction of social difference. Taking the body as the point of departure, it deals with the processes through which social problems and social inequalities are constructed. In particular, it examines the shifting ways in which our ideas about issues such as 'disability', 'race' and ethnicity, and sexuality influence the development of social policies.

AbstractIn this paper, I discuss the (in)compatibility between democracy and ethic universalism on the one hand, and absolute respect of collective ethnic or national minority groups on the other. Ethic relativism will have to be acknowledged a consequence of cultural pluralism in light of the ethnocentric tendencies that loom behind the concept of universalism. In other words, I call for a discussion of a contradiction that lies at the heart of the democratic idea of representative government; namely, that universal franchise can co‐exist with citizenship and nationality as defined by the nation‐state project. I argue that the legal and political concepts of citizenship and nationality serve to seal the social systems in which they are embedded. In a world of "international migrations" that framework is no longer justifiable.

"In diesem Text diskutiert der Autor was die (In-)Kompatibilität zwischen den Forderungen der repräsentativen Demokratie und dem ethischen Universalismus auf der einen Seite, dem absoluten Respekt der kollektiven Identität nationaler und ethnischer Minoritäten oder Gruppen auf der anderen Seite genannt werden könnte. Vor allem diese Gruppen und Minoritäten verlangen in Anbetracht der Universalismusforderung moderner Demokratien eine Politik der Anerkennung des ethischen Relativismus als eine Konsequenz des kulturellen Pluralismus. In anderen Worten diskutiert er die grundlegenden Widersprüche zwischen der Grundidee repräsentativer Demokratien - die politische und rechtliche Gleichbehandlung und Gleichstellung - und dem Kern des Nationalstaatsprojekts - die Verbindung von bürgerlicher und nationaler Zugehörigkeit. Diese beiden politischen und juristischen Konzepte 'Bürgertum' und 'Nationalität' zielen darauf, konkrete soziale Systeme abzuschirmen. Der vorliegende Beitrag befasst sich mit dem Phänomen der Geburtsblindheit als leibliche Andersheit vor dem Hintergrund geltender soziohistorischer Bedingungen. Wird (leibliche) Andersheit in soziale Bedeutungs- und Bewertungsprozesse aufgenommen, so wird Alterität sozial konstruiert. In unserer Zeit bieten sich insbesondere auch Massenmedien als Sinnstiftungsagenturen an und spielen Alteritätsformationen in den gesellschaftlichen Diskurs über 'Behinderung' ein; hierzu werden empirische Studien vorgestellt. Diese Sinnangebote werden von 'behinderten', wie 'nicht-behinderten' Menschen aufgenommen und in das Selbst- und Weltverständnis integriert: eine geburtsblinde Interviewpartnerin schildert aus einer Innenperspektive (als Rezipientin und Mit-Produzentin) ihre Bewertung des medialen Angebots. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Konzept 'Normalität' einerseits und ethische Überlegungen andererseits runden den Beitrag ab.

The construction of difference is central to racism, sexism and other forms of oppression. This paper examines the similar and dissimilar ways in which race and gender have been constructed in the United States and analyzes the consequences of these differences in construction for the development of social policy and the growth and nature of movements for social change.
