Ibn Khaldūn is one of the outstanding thinkers about the nature of society and politics in the pre-modern Arab world. This volume presents the political writings of the fourteenth-century philosopher, stressing their enduring relevance. Arnold Toynbee used to say that Ibn Khaldūn's work was the most impressive endeavour to build a theory out of history ever undertaken before the nineteenth century. However, translators and historians discovered Ibn Khaldūn at the time when new revolutionary economic and political conditions were dismissive of his philosophy. In this edition, Gabriel Martinez-Gros brings Ibn Khaldūn's political thought to the forefront, exploring his theories in the context of his era, but also emphasizing their profound resonances with modern society. Far from the caricature of Ibn Khaldūn as a 'tribal philosopher', Martinez-Gros shows that Ibn Khaldūn's thought is about creating wealth in an agrarian society, concerned with economic concepts, demography, war and violence.

The relation between education and political thought has a long history. Early French sociological thinking regarding the development of a secular "modernist" society focused on the importance of education, as in the work of Emile Durkheim (1858-1917) who lectured in both pedagogy and sociology (Turner, 2006, p. 158). Much later, Karl Mannheim (1893–1947) would render education central to his view of social reconstruction and democratic planning. Many would argue that education is not a neutral enterprise. This conception, though generally associated with the work of Paulo Freire (1921-1997) and people he inspired, has been the mantra of several other movements. ; peer-reviewed

What can the Romans teach us about politics? This thematic introduction to Roman political thought shows how the Roman world developed political ideas of lasting significance, from the consequential constitutional notions of the separation of powers, political legitimacy, and individual rights to key concepts in international relations, such as imperialism, just war theory, and cosmopolitanism. Jed W. Atkins relates these and many other important ideas to Roman republicanism, traces their evolution across all major periods of Roman history, and describes Christianity's important contributions to their development. Using the politics and political thought of the United States as a case study, he argues that the relevance of Roman political thought for modern liberal democracies lies in the profound mixture of ideas both familiar and foreign to us that shape and enliven Roman republicanism. Accessible to students and non-specialists, this book provides an invaluable guide to Roman political thought and its enduring legacies
This highly acclaimed introduction to green political thought is now available in a new edition, having been fully revised and updated to take into account the areas which have grown in importance since the first edition was published.
Andrew Dobson's cogent and stimulating analysis of the political ideas, aims and strategies of the green movement has quickly established itself as the standard text in the field. This new edition locates ecologism clearly within the general field of political ideologies, discussing the philosophical basis of green politics and the political-theoretical problems it raises. Green Political Thought is an excellent introduction to the field for students of environmental politics and of political ideologies, and for anyone who wishes to know why green ideas are important in the late twentieth century.
