Traits of interest concerning reproductive performance, growth performance, carcass and meat quality of local pig breeds involved in H2020 project TREASURE were collected from the available literature, unpublished data available to partners or results recorded in the experiments within the project. The survey revealed great variability in the availability and quality of information. Reproductive performance of local pig breeds is lower than in conventional modern pig breeds, not only due to their genetic background but also due to the management. Data on growth rates reflect the heterogeneity of different production systems and feeding regimes used. The growth potential of the majority of local pig breeds is not well exploited, and their nutritional requirements are not known. Generally, local pig breeds show low muscular development and high potential for fat tissue deposition and are slaughtered at older age and weight, which results in higher intramuscular fat and more intense colour of meat. However, considerable differences exist between them and their potentials, not only in their production systems. For many local pig breeds studied in the project, the collected information provides the first in-depth overview of their productive performance in their preserved, present-day phenotype. ; The research was conducted within the project TREASURE, which received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 634476. Characterization of Creole breeds is still very limited, including reproductive performance. In this research, we assessed the semen quality of three Colombian Creole breeds (Zungo, Casco de Mula, and San Pedreño) relative to international breeds (Duroc, Belgian Landrace, and Pietrain). Two doses from seven boars per breed were evaluated for sperm kinetics and membrane and acrosome integrity using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) and flow cytometry, respectively. The Creole pigs showed lower (P<0.05) volume of fluid ejaculated (185.5 mL vs 239.9 mL), sperm concentration (340.5 x106 vs 395.4 x106 sperm/mL), motility (90.9% vs 95.3%) and progressive motility (63.1% vs 67.2%) than international breeds. No relevant differences between Creole and international breeds for sperm velocity traits were observed, but Creole boars had lower (P<0.05) proportion of morphologic normal sperm (86.1% vs 90.6%) and of sperm with both intact plasma membrane and acrosome integrity (76.8% vs 87.5%). Mitochondrial membrane potential did not differ between breeds. Creole breeds in general produced less normal and motile sperm per ejaculate than international breeds (49.3 x109 vs 81.5 x109). Although San Pedreño had larger ejaculates than Zungo and Zungo had a greater proportion of normal and motile sperm than San Pedreño, Creole breeds did not differ for total amount of normal and motile sperm per ejaculate. The semen from Colombian Creole pigs is qualitatively acceptable being less abundant but rich in normal and motile sperm than that from commercial breeds. All these activities have been designed to obtain essential information to develop future productive strategies for each of the involved breeds, taking into account to obtain local high-quality products, and seeking for optimum pig performance and high animal welfare conditions in the production systems under consideration. The information provided constitutes a unique and valuable set of data for the management of these breeds and the further development of local pork chains. In some cases it is the first available data for the breeds concerned. A general overview of the developed activities will be presented highlighting some of the achievements obtained. These data have to be connected with herdbooks to estimate genetic parameters of the traits (heritabilities and genetic correlations) which are necessary to define breeding objectives. Today the situation is very different from one local breed to another. No or very few phenotypes are recorded in some of them, while breeding programs already exist for a few breeds. To promote phenotyping, a dedicated database and a website were developed in the frame of the TREASURE project. First, the required variables have been collected for six local breeds: Basque (FR), Bísaro (PT), Crna slavonska (HR), Gascon (FR), Krškopoljski (SI) and Schwäbisch-Hällisches (DE). In total 74 variables have been identified dealing with animal herdbook information (10), rearing and growth (22), carcass (22) and meat quality (20) attributes. The database is compatible with the various identifiers used in the different countries: animal IDs, breed, farm… codifications. Major attention has been paid to the description of measurement methods of traits. Thus, each carcass and meat quality phenotype is associated to a method description representing 35 additional variables. The website can be easily translated into several languages. The website and database are currently on test until the end of the TREASURE project. All the breeds studied in TREASURE are free to use these tools. Animal genetic resources are important reservoirs of genetic diversity derived by distinct selection pressures or as result of adaptation to production conditions. The TREASURE project has investigated genetic variability in 20 European autochthonous pig breeds with the aim to describe their singularity, evaluate their adaptation, develop new methodologies for their management and identify DNA markers for breed allocation and meat authentication. Genomic data have been obtained by genotyping candidate gene markers and high density single nucleotide polymorphism arrays in ~48 animals from each breed and by whole genome resequencing. Description of genetic diversity has been obtained using several parameters. Runs of homozygosity and genomic inbreeding measures have been correlated with pedigree inbreeding coefficients. A few breed specific markers have been identified and applied. Genome wide association studies have identified genomic regions affecting unique phenotypes. This project represents one of the few examples of exploitation of genomic information that not only benefits the investigated animal genetic resources but also can provide useful information that could impact commercial populations. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chips offer the opportunity for whole-genome comparisons among individuals and breeds. Animals from twenty European local pigs breeds, reared in nine countries (Croatia: Black Slavonian, Turopolje; France: Basque, Gascon; Germany: Schwabisch-Hällisches Schwein; Italy: Apulo Calabrese, Casertana, Cinta Senese, Mora Romagnola, Nero Siciliano, Sarda; Lithuania: Indigenous Wattle, White Old Type; Portugal: Alentejana, Bísara; Serbia: Moravka, Swallow-Bellied Mangalitsa; Slovenia: Krškopolje pig; Spain: Iberian, Majorcan Black), and three commercial breeds (Duroc, Landrace and Large White) were sampled and genotyped with the GeneSeek Genomic Profiler (GGP) 70 K HD porcine genotyping chip. A dataset of 51 Wild Boars from nine countries was also added, summing up to 1186 pigs (~ 49 pigs/ breed). The aim was to: (i) investigate individual admixture ancestries and (ii) assess breed traceability via discriminant analysis on principal components (DAPC). Albeit the mosaic of shared ancestries found for Nero Siciliano, Sarda and Moravka, admixture analysis indicated independent evolvement for the rest of the breeds. Turopolje pig (TP) is a local Croatian breed which nearly extinct in the second half of the 20th century. Currently, despite the state support, the TP is still endangered and to self-sustain the breed a new marketing strategy, based on the meat products with an extra added value, is needed. As consumers nowadays increasingly demand for more convenient and healthier types of products, in present work (within TREASURE project) we investigated consumers' acceptance of health-related innovations associated with the reduction of salting or smoking of TP dry-cured ham. A consumer (n=120) sensory test was carried out in Zagreb city area with the three types of TP hams (typically salted and smoked, less salted or less smoked) and two types of standard hams (conventional and premium) from modern pig breeds. Effect of information on innovation and/or breed on ham preferences was tested using three-step procedures as blind, expected and actual (informed) test on liking scale from 1 (dislike extremely) to 9 (like extremely). Data were analysed by GLM procedures at 0.05 α-level. In the blind test, in the absence of information, no significant differences between ham liking scores were found. In the expectancy test, when only information is given, all types of TP ham were more preferred than conventional ham, but only typical TP ham was preferred over the premium ham. Finally, when tasting is repeated with the information, all TP hams were scored higher than premium ham, while innovative TP hams were scored similar as conventional ham. This results suggest the preference of TP hams over the standard hams and a good acceptance of health-related innovations in TP ham by Croatian consumers.
