In 2014, we carried out a survey in Chinamhora and Chihota communal lands on the outskirts of Harare city, with the aim of understanding pesticide management practices among market gardening farmers. The farmers grew vegetables that mostly included tomatoes, cabbages, rape, cucumbers, onions and carrots, and they used mainly organophosphates and pyrethroids to control pests. A questionnaire was administered to 119 male heads of households across both study areas. The questionnaire contained 13 closed-ended questions in three sections: source and quality of pesticides, handling and use, and storage and disposal of pesticides used to protect crops. The study identified numerous gaps related to the handling of pesticides. Although the quality of labelling and packaging can largely identify the quality of pesticide, most of the farmers (77.3%) could not distinguish between genuine and counterfeit pesticides; approximately half (47.9%) of the farmers were not concerned about expiry dates; 27% did not observe post-spray periods; and 63% did not take precautions according to colour-coding of the pesticides. Also of concern were the large numbers of farmers who were not using protective coveralls (54.3%); a substantial number who were not using knapsacks for spraying (21.8%); poor storage of the pesticides, as shown by the variation in storage facilities; the use of empty pesticide containers for domestic purposes (20.2%); and lack of strict adherence to recommended dose levels, with some farmers (28.6%) merely estimating the dilution of pesticides. Training through outreach programmes is recommended. Significance: Identifies gaps in the way pesticides are used and stored by rural market gardening farmers. Highlights the need for government agricultural extension workers to hold regular workshops for farmers. Indicates the need for government ministries to monitor counterfeit pesticides.

While agricultural recycling is recognized as an alternative to stockpiling or incineration, the benefits of the use of organic wastes as fertilizers and soil amendments should be assessed together with potential environmental and toxicological impacts due to the presence of trace elements (TE). While these considerations are common in Northern countries, issues and problems involved in waste management are increasing in developing countries. Within the framework of the ANR project ISARD, designed to set up methods to ensure suitable agricultural intensification based on the recycling of organic wastes, this study investigated the contents of major chemical elements and TE in various composts, from sewage sludge, household refuses, animals manure and garden rubbish, applied on market-garden crops on the outskirts of cities in various countries (Saint Denis, La Réunion, France; Majunga, Magacascar; and Dakar, Senegal). Organic waste contents are various and depend on the geographic origin and type of wastes (e.g. Pb = 0.82-2100 mg kg-1 dry matter). Half of the organic wastes that were examined exhibit very high TE concentrations, and are above the limits set by European legislation and found in the literature data for organic wastes designed for market gardening. Size fractionation of organic wastes exhibited a fairly large enrichment in TE in the smaller solid fraction (0.2-20 ?m) in comparison with raw wastes. This result suggests that TE were potentially associated with organic matter in the 0.2-20 ?m fraction, which is the most reactive to degradation of micro-organisms. The use of such organic wastes for market gardening could consequently be potentially harmful with respect to TE phytoavailability and phytotoxicity. However, total concentrations of TE in organic wastes and of TE dynamic in amended soils will be crucial to predict TE phytoavailability. (Texte intégral)

The Vegetable Marketing Organization (VMO) historically has long been a focal point of the study of the postwar boom of local agriculture in Hong Kong for two reasons. First, it centralized/monopolized the city's vegetable wholesaling by eradicating all traditional marketing channels; second, its semiofficial status allowed it to accumulate a set of useful statistics on the production and circulation of local fresh produces. This article draws on fieldwork on local market gardeners and studies of colonial marketing institutions to argue that official statistics are rather inadequate to grasp the dynamics of local agriculture. A study of the so-called "dawn markets" and the vegetative dimension of the plants that lie outside the official system is necessary. It also suggests that dawn markets were not any residue from the pre-VMO era, but an "unruly twin" of the post-World War II colonial Hong Kong's governmentality.
; Focusing on the case study of Buenos Aires, this thesis analyzes the way local gardening areas are being preserved in order to feed the cities. AbstractThis article analyses professional satisfaction of farm managers of organic diversified market garden farms selling through short food supply chains, in the south of France. Faced with strong economic and agronomic constraints, the cropping arrangements on these farms result in very tense experiences, both spatially and temporally. However, our analysis shows that while diversified organic market gardening is a demanding farm work environment, it paradoxically can create high professional satisfaction as a result of the complex integration of different elements, including social support and decision latitude. Indeed, the diversity of tasks, farmers' autonomy, their role in decision‐making, and the challenging dimensions of organic farming contribute to what Karasek and Theorell call 'active work'. Nevertheless, our research concludes that social support appears to be necessary to reach a good level of work satisfaction. Our findings also identify future research opportunities to examine, for example, how diversification impacts the work and the professional satisfaction of hired workers in organic market gardening contexts.
International audience ; Based on a case study on the last market gardening farm in the city of Caen (Normandy), this paper tries to articulate an approach to the urban food supply and its governance. Conducted under the research program FRUGAL (Urban Forms and Food Governance) of the PSDR 4, the study shows the weakness of agricultural and food planning in Caen and suggests action lines for the future of the farm studied.
