The following article corresponds to an analysis and a report of results of an empiric investigation performed at two intersections that will be impacted by the public works of SITM-MIO in Cali. The report answers two general questions: 1) What type of traffi c signals govern the public space in the intersections of 5th Street and 66th Avenue, and 36th Street and 46th Avenue in Cali?, and 2) What do citizens think about the way traffi c signals in these two intersections have been used? ' e study of traffi c signals was one of the strategies implemented by the group of researchers, who are the authors of this article, in order to discuss the raising of consciousness of the use of public space.
The appearance of urban representations within the pictorial scene in Chile came up in the nineties as a reply to the configuration of the same scene in the previous decade. Arstists such as Tacla and Altamirano in the beginning and Voluspa Jarpa, Natalia Babarovic, Ignacio Gumucio and Pablo Langlois, later, incorporate in their works pictorial mechanisms such as the out of painting, shift of perspective, composition fragmentation and the staging of precariousness. Their works share a vision that draws a wounded, silenced and guarded city. In the texts of the same period, a specific perspective characterizes the representation of the contemporary city. Voice and gaze move through an inhabitable stage. This work aims to define under a comparative reading, the link between both, literary and pictorial supports and to question the context in which both "writings" take place. Specifically, to analyze the incorporation of narrative structures in the pictorial representations of the city, as well as the political and historical contexts of these imaginaries in the field of Chilean art of the nineties.
Human errors are the cause of most traffic accidents, with drivers' inattention and wrong driving decisions being the two main sources. These errors can be reduced, but not completely eliminated. That is why Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) can reduce the number, danger and severity of traffic accidents. Several ADAS, which nowadays are being researched for Intelligent vehicles, are based on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics technologies. In this article a research platform for the implementation of systems based on computer vision is presented, and different visual perception modules useful for some ADAS such as Line Keeping System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Pedestrian Protector, or Speed Supervisor, are described. ; This work was supported in part by the Spanish government under CICYT grant TRA2004-07441-C03-01.
AbstractDoes learning political candidates' social categories through visual cues affect voter preferences? This paper explores this question by conducting a visual conjoint survey experiment with 2324 German voters, varying whether respondents received information on candidates through explicit labels or pretested AI-generated candidate pictures. The results confirm our expectations that the way in which social categories are perceived affects preferences, with visual cues having a more significant effect on voter preferences compared to textual cues, leading to more discriminatory preferences for certain social categories. Moreover, we show that the effect of visual cues is moderated by the visibility of social categories, with visible social categories, such as gender binaries and ethnic in-/out-group, eliciting more discriminatory preferences with visual cues. The study sheds light on how visible and invisible social categories affect political candidates' preferences and emphasizes the importance of considering the intersectionality of social categories and their relationship with ideology.
Abstract There are important differences between central and peripheral vision. With respect to shape, contours retain phenomenal sharpness, although some contours disappear if they are near other contours. This leads to some uniform textures to appear non-uniform (Honeycomb illusion, Bertamini et al., 2016). Unlike other phenomena of shape perception in the periphery, this illusion is showing how continuity of the texture does not contribute to phenomenal continuity. We systematically varied the relationship between central and peripheral regions, and we collected subjective reports (how far can one see lines) as well as judgments of line orientation. We used extended textures created with a square grid and some additional lines that are invisible when they are located at the corners of the grid, or visible when they are separated from the grid (control condition). With respects to subjective reports, we compared the region of visibility for cases in which the texture was uniform (Exp 1a), or when in a central region the lines were different (Exp 1b). There were no differences, showing no role of objective uniformity on visibility. Next, in addition to the region of visibility we measured sensitivity using a forced-choice task (line tilted left or right) (Exp 2). The drop in sensitivity with eccentricity matched the size of the region in which lines were perceived in the illusion condition, but not in the control condition. When participants were offered a choice to report of the lines were present or absent (Exp 3) they confirmed that they did not see them in the illusion condition, but saw them in the control condition. We conclude that mechanisms that control perception of contours operate differently in the periphery, and override prior expectations, including that of uniformity. Conversely, when elements are detected in the periphery, we assign to them properties based on information from central vision, but these shapes cannot be identified correctly when the task requires such discrimination.
; Abstract. This dissertation is constituted from a convergent mixed methodology that seeks to build an interpretative framework within the visual functional diversity in children from the city of Bogota through the articulation of the Social Determinants of Health model. This interpretive framework, understood as the set of conscious strategic efforts made by groups of people, forges shared forms for considering the world which is the result of the integration of two approaches, namely, qualitative and quantitative aims to promote the acceptance of functional diversity as part of enriching human diversity and the achievement of full dignity. It also brings functional diversity to the same level of possibilities that equal opportunity has with special attention to equity which in turn surpasses the hegemonic approach to risk that other people have, beginning with children with visual functional diversity. Ultimately, the dissertation proposes political and public health possibilities that transcend the same visual functional loss to collective functional diversity ; Doctorado

This study combines data analysis with multilevel processing of visual communication to classify the visual frames of state-sponsored social media propaganda. We relied on Twitter's Election Integrity data to sample five propaganda targets of the Internet Research Agency, including Russian and American partisan groups, and explored how their operations deviated from canonical state propaganda marked by symbols of national identity and heroic masculinity. The results show that the visual frames employed by the Internet Research Agency are designed to embody the vox populi with relatable, familiar, or attractive faces of ordinary people. The results also indicate that Internet Research Agency influence operations displayed cultural acuity and familiarity with the social identity of their targets, and that the visual narrative the agency crafted trafficked primarily in the tropes of regular guys or attractive young women. We discuss these findings and argue that state-sponsored propaganda has attuned to subcultural and visual affordances of social platforms.
