The mid-Victorian era and the Edwardian period witnessed important advances in graphic arts leading to the invention of photography. The eastward imperial expansion of Britain during this period resulted in the emergence of different representations of the Orient. After the role played by paintings in conveying a rather fantasist and imaginative vision based on an orientalist background, photography, in its capacity to reproduce reality, promised a more accurate image. Thus, the aim of this paper is to show that the earliest photographs of the Orient and mainly of Egypt unveiled the role of photography in creating a new orientalist vision tinged with the imperialist ambitions of Britain. It focuses on the use of photography in the press and how it was propelled in the political field to confirm its commitment in a propagandist strategy to gain the support of public opinion. This paper offers a critical review of photography within a specific colonial context and determines the strong links between technological development and the sustainability of the imperialism demanded by the rush to acquire new colonies in the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The study of the images published in the Illustrated London News in relation to the situation in Egypt unveils the manipulation of the image to reinforce the imperial system. One of the conclusions is related to the different strategies used to give the image a propagandist role, notably to enhance colonial policies.

ABSTRACT: During the government of Augustus the city of Sagunto was transformed in a place symbol of modernity. It is no coincidence that the necessary developing infrastructures were consolidated around it for an optimal development: higher quality viae or better port platforms. Different type of streets emerged following an order of importance depending many times on the wealth of their users. Towards the exit of the city burial monuments were placed honoring relevant citizens. As many other major towns of Hispania, Saguntum is not an exception of great transformations. Keywords: Saguntum, Higth Roman Empire, Roman roads, propaganda and municipal power.

; We refer here to the possibility that the figure of the serpent which appears on some archaeological materials from the time of Augustus in Hispania formed an interesting part of the imperial propaganda and a myth that Octavius himself would have liked to spread in relation to his divine origin and the Aurea Aetas that his government was bringing from Rome. We suppose also that such propaganda may have used the figure of this animal (here a good serpent, genius loci/ agathodaimon/ genius Augusti) in different ways out of interest, depending on how the figure was being used in local cults within different parts of the Iberian Peninsula Hispania or based on its relation with diverse historical figures like Alexander the Great, Marcus Antonius, or Pompeius.

; Researching the politics of portrayals of women that formed part of the ideological terrain of the domus allows us to understand the space that certain ladies of the imperial family occupied in real life and the importance of women and gender for Roman identity. This analysis of the use of women as political icons focuses on the way they themselves were involved in advocating motherhood as a strategy for legitimizing power, one of the most effective messages.

; In this paper we try to analyze the empresses Faustina Minor, wife of Marcus Aurelius, and Iulia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus. In order to do so, we begin with the granting of the title of mater castrorum to both women as an analysis point. Despite the somehow idyllical vision that has been presented about the rule of the Antoninus Pius´s succesor, the borders of the Empire were beginning to show relative instability during that time. Therefore, we are witnessing an unprecedented situation. Faustina was honoured with the title of mater castrorum, becoming the first Roman empress to receive it. Septimius Severus, the first representative of the Severian Dynasty, became Emperor after a bloody civil war. In addition to proclaiming himself as Marcus Aurelius´son and Commodus´ brother, his entire family participated in his dynastic propaganda. Iulia Domna was frequently seen doing similar hairstyles to those of Faustina and, also, receiving similar awards like the title of mater castrorum. Therefore, in this work we intend to address, as far as possible, which were the motivations and causes for the granting of such title. We will observe how women came into an environment that was eminently masculine, such as the military. ; The following paper deals with the political use that was made of the coin in the Ancient Rome. Specifically, the use of currency as an instrument in institutional propaganda programs is analyzed, that is, at the service of imperial power throughout the 1st century AD. The work is framed above all in the Julio-Claudia and Flavia dynasties. The sovereigns treated in this paper came to power as a result of an armed conflict, so they had a great need for legitimation. In this sense, Emperor Augustus used the currency for this purpose, legitimizing himself both at a military and mythological level at the same time as legitimizing his heirs and thus consolidating his own dynasty. Vespasian, a century later, recovered the Julio-Claudian policy in almost every sense, the essence and the Augustan values as a means of legitimizing his government. For this reason, the work focuses on the Principalities of Augustus and Vespasian, delving into the many similarities that existed between the policies of both emperors and their respective dynasties, since the first princeps had become a reference on how to rule and control their own picture.
