Milieus in the Gig Economy
The present project provides a survey of contemporary work relations in the context of the so-called gig economy (also known as the sharing, collaborative, platform, and on-demand economy). Against the background of recent concerns over automation replacing work at a large scale, the project argues instead that the displacement of work warrants more critical attention. The project examines how the gig economy presents their services as automating technologies while downplaying the ways that workers' employment, not to mention lives, are made increasingly precarious by these alleged improvements. Specifically, the project surveys three gig-economies, the ride-hailing service Uber, the home-sharing service Airbnb, and the online labor marketplace Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT). Methodologically, the project employs an interdisciplinary approach, integrating insights from political economy, critical theory, discourse analysis, and ethnographic research. A qualitative assessment of the respective work environments shifts a relatively apolitical discourse on the future of work not only toward a more pronounced critique of the gig economy, but also toward a renewed discussion on the kinds of jobs that earn the labels of freelance and entrepreneurship. Professionals and scholars concerned with the future of work stand to benefit from the findings of the research, particularly as it challenges some commonplace assumptions in the discourse of what has been termed postcapitalism. ; Ph. Brüchige Solidarität in der Gig Economy: Zwischen Zusammenhalt und Individualismus
In: AIS-Studien: das Online-Journal der Sektion Arbeits- und Industriesoziologie in der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS), Band 17, Heft 1, S. 23-37
ISSN: 1866-9549

Creative arts careers in the gig economy

"Rather than work at inflexible jobs that stifle their imagination, gig workers actively participate in constructing their own careers. And creativity and ingenuity are central to the most popular careers in the gig economy-blogging, podcasting, and selling arts, crafts, and fashions on e-commerce sites like Etsy"--
Bibliometric Analysis of Gig Economy
In: Administrative Sciences: open access journal, Band 12, Heft 2, S. 51
ISSN: 2076-3387
Technological advances such as smartphones, mobile applications, and online platforms have enabled a new form of economy, known as a gig economy, at a large scale, in which there is a free-market system allowing organizations (job providers) to hire independent contractors (job seeker). Unlike traditional employer and employee relationships, the gig economy creates opportunities for independent workers to seek short-term contract jobs and temporary positions. This article presents a systematic review of the literature associated with a bibliometric analysis of the global perspective of the gig economy. The study aims to present the analysis of published articles that explore the gig economy. Initially, 2297 documents were retrieved by gig economy as a keyword from Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science between 2014 and 2022. After applying certain criteria, only 686 publications were selected for bibliometrics analysis. The selected articles were used to measure bibliometric indicators and evaluate the research work on the gig economy. Bibliometrics an R package for bibliometric and co-citation analysis was used to achieve the results. VOSviewer was also used to analyze the co-occurrence of the keywords. The results highlight the publication trends, top contributing authors and their countries, most cited articles, keywords, and most contributing journals to the research field.
