Femicide is a relatively new area of study that was first introduced in 1976. Since then, there has been a push by many scholars to develop the field further, despite some arguments made that femicide is not as important of an issue given the relatively low rates of female homicides compared to male homicides. This article reviews three levels of analysis — micro, meso, and macro — and discusses culture and class as two contributing factors to femicide, illustrating that femicide is a complex global phenomenon that requires a multilateral and intersectional approach to be better understood. It concludes that by understanding and deconstructing certain social and institutional structures, we will be better equipped to understand femicide as a phenomenon and create more effective systems and legislation for a safer global society.

This article presents a brief analysis of the classification of feminicide figure in several Latin American countries –particularly in Argentina– examining the origin and the theoretical and political development of these concepts, as well as major connecting existing features and the differences in the new figures criminal of the continent. The complexity and diversity of criminal types, and their relationship to existing figures are challenges to law enforcement these. La complejidad y diversidad de tipos penales, y su relación con figuras preexistentes constituyen desafíos para la aplicación de estas leyes. La introducción de elementos tales como género, misoginia, odio, etc., genera resistencias y dificultades en la interpretación judicial, dando lugar a elaboraciones jurisprudenciales no contribuyen a la comprensión de la violencia contra las mujeres. The sociological literature on femicide, compared to intimate partner and other forms of gender violence, is scarce. While feminist sociology has addressed the inaudibility of women, femicide remains invisible. Femicide rates are social facts worthy of sociological attention. Like suicide, femicide has to be defined and analysed according to type. The article postulates possible reasons for the invisibility of the phenomenon, such as the unpleasantness of the subject, scope, its conception as a radical feminist idea, fuzziness, its identification with other concepts like genocide, and methodological difficulties in researching it because of the impossibility of researching dead women first-hand, missing data and the difficulties in comparing data cross-nationally. None of the seven posited hypotheses could account for the dearth of sociological literature on the subject. Suggestions for enhancing the visibility of femicide are made, with a call to unearth the phenomenon and remove its invisibility in sociology.

The relationship between masculinity and femicide has been virtually ignored in the literature on both masculinities and femicide. The aim of this paper then is to concentrate on the relationship between masculinities and femicide by first briefly summarizing feminist theorizing in the 1970s and 1980s and its relation to the emergence of Raewyn Connell's concept of "hegemonic masculinity." Following that, new directions in scholarly work on hegemonic and non-hegemonic masculinities are discussed, with particular attention directed to the recent work of the author on the relationship among hegemonic, dominant, dominating, and positive masculinities. Finally, the paper concludes by briefly illustrating how this new conception of masculinities can be applied to two types of femicide: intimate partner femicide and so-called "honor" femicides.

More than 400 women have been murdered in and around Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, over the past decade. As the murders continue unabated and unsolved, and with the likely complicity of state authorities, they have triggered a dynamic cultural response from writers, filmmakers, singers, and others who deplore the murders while suggesting the underlying causes of the femicides. Our articleexamines three of these responses: the photojournalism of Julián Cardona, a novel by Carlos Fuentes, and a song by Los Tigres del Norte. We conclude that even as these artists express a profoundsympathy for the victims' plight, their representations, which are based on patriarchal binaries of male dominance and female submissiveness, act to revictimize the women. Since for these culturalproducers, it was women's active incorporation into the wage labor force as assembly plant workers that generated Juárez's "disorder," then it follows that "order" will only be restored when female passivity is reasserted. We also explore how the workof feminist critics, specifically Alicia Gaspar de Alba, challenges this approach by highlighting female/subaltern resistance, addressing the victims' basic rights, and raising vital questions aboutgender identity on a highly militarized border.
