This volume examines the effects of the decolonization of communication studies. It shows that the discipline has undergone a rapid paradigm shift since the launching of the Ferment in the Field special edition of the Journal of Communication, in which scholars were called upon to rethink the field because of the crisis it was facing.

Grounded in media studies, this chapter discusses how different minority languages are served by the media in various contexts. It specifically addresses how the needs of minority language speakers are fulfilled by the media in different languages. A pertinent issue in this context is how users of minority languages consume media in various languages in the emerging digital media ecosystem. Our focus on minority languages can contribute to many aspects of research on language contact, such as issues of language conflict, ethodologies useful for studying language contact, language standardization, language shift, and language planning, policy, and politics. This focus is particularly interesting, as minority language speakers often have more varied language skills and needs (which they fulfill through their daily media habits) than the 'average' mainstream media consumer. Furthermore, minority languages tend to be more threatened than nurtured by the media, as a result of varied and asymmetric language contacts. ; Peer reviewed

Introduction to Communication Studies for Southern African Students 2nd edition is an introductory textbook on the theories of and approaches to communication studies for first-year students. Building on the framework of the first edition it reflects the dynamic evolution of communication studies in the recent past, introducing new insights and approaches to communication media and digital communication. Acknowledging the unique requirements of the African communication environment, the text is illuminated with a range of uniquely South and southern African examples to contextualise the theory, with chapters written by leading academic authors from East and Southern Africa.
