Mastery in cross-cultural communication and understanding in our "global village" is currently, and will be even more so in the future, a sine qua non in college teaching. This article sets out to analyze in an interdisciplinary manner a selection of contemporary perspectives pertinent to cross-cultural encounters to develop guidelines for interpreting and improving the teaching and learning of foreign languages.
