Using survey data collected from 382 Chinese police officers training in a Chinese police university, this research is the first empirical study to describe Chinese police perceptions of subcultural topics, including the role of crime fighting and community service, cynicism, isolation, solidarity, receptivity to change and traditionalism. This book describes the research method adopted in this study and the findings together with comparisons with Western police cultural studies. In addition, it covers an extensive review of Chinese policing history and evolution of policing strategies, and a review of police subcultural themes and their potential determinants on the basis of Western studies, making it both beneficial and of interest for researchers and practitioners who would like to know more about contemporary policing in China. This book provides readers with insights into a little-investigated area of policing - the perceptions of Chinese frontline police. It also makes it easy to compare the similarities and differences between police perceptions in China and the West.

Abstract
The past two decades have witnessed a wave of research into the history of East Asian international relations (IR). Scholars seek to broaden the historical frames of reference in IR for both theory testing and theory generation. The article reviews this recent trend, examining its limitations and exploring future agenda. In studying historical East Asian IR, scholars have different expectations regarding whether their research would support, complement, or undermine mainstream Western IR. The spatial and temporal scope of their historical inquiries, as well as theoretical ambitions, therefore, differ significantly. Scholars no longer treat all East Asian history as simply one case, but as multiple cases with divergent patterns, and they recognize that the system consisted not solely of China but of multiple actors. In addition to contrasting East Asia with Western Europe, they explore also the similarities between East Asia and other non-Western regions. To advance the agenda, however, scholars must scrupulously navigate three tensions. They are: the tension between the "East" and "West"; the tension between the two disciplines of history and IR; and the tension between past and present. Future studies, therefore, must broaden their horizons in order to better transcend ethnocentrism and exceptionalism, refine their methodology both to avoid selection bias and conduct more sophisticated comparisons, and to maintain a proper distance from contemporary politics. Most importantly, they should combine high-quality historical research with cutting-edge IR theoretical trends to construct dynamic theories that could be applied to other regions.

This article investigates the Chinese government's evolving policies toward the emerging global norm of 'responsibility to protect' (R2P). While its principle of non-interference persists, Beijing has gradually acknowledged the responsibility to respond to humanitarian catastrophes in certain circumstances. Meanwhile, to ensure the concept's limited application and reducing the instances where it might breach state sovereignty, Beijing actively participated in relevant debates to shape R2P in a direction that gives primacy to capacity-building and preventative measures. After examining how China engaged with the R2P in the recent crises in Darfur, Libya and Syria, the article argues, perceived threat from R2P upon its regime security explains Beijing's continued efforts to constrain the norm's development, while its aspiration for a status of responsible power encourages the Chinese government to engage with R2P more actively and flexibly. The case of R2P thus sheds new light on the complex interactions between China and the evolving global order. (J Contemp China/GIGA)
