Since the federation of Australia in 1901 Geoscience Australia, and its predecessor organisations, have amassed a significant collection of microscope slides of a variety of physical samples from across Australia, Antarctica, and adjacent regions. The extensive nature of the collection and the diverse and often remote nature of the source locations means that the cost of recreating the collection, if possible, would be $AU100Ms. The original samples were collected as part of either extensive government geological mapping programs or more specific scientific expeditions conducted for major Government initiatives. They are technically open to anyone (industry, educational institutions, the public), but are essentially unknown and almost impossible to access.Management of this collection was based on an aged card catalogue and ledger system developed in the pre-digital era. The aged management system, with increasing deterioration of the physical media, combined with loss of access to even some of the original contributors meant that rescue work was needed. Rescuing the collection made use of non-traditional means, including the extensive use of web-based citizen science and reference to a small number of onsite volunteers.Through essentially a volunteer effort, from a group more used to biology related items, the project has seen the transcription of some 40,000 sample metadata records (more than 2.5 times our current electronic holdings). This paper examines the process undertaken and advocates the approach that has made it successful. It promotes the value and benefits to Geoscience Australia, participating volunteers and potential users of the collection.

The AuScope Geochemistry Network (AGN), established in 2019, is an Australian consortium of Earth Science institutes cooperating to develop a national, Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) distributed geochemistry data repository. AGN is part of Auscope's 10 year strategy, which emphasises both national (e.g., the Downward Looking Telescope (DLT)), as well as international initiatives (e.g., United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs)). Hence, AGN cannot operate as an 'island': locally built geochemistry infrastructures need to integrate with equivalent initiatives internationally. AGN connects AuScope to the OneGeochemistry initiative, a new collaboration forming around similar globally-distributed research and government infrastructures. OneGeochemistry aims to develop/define the required international standards and best practices to establish a framework to enable global networking of FAIR geochemical databases. Through OneGeochemistry, AGN will be able to act both locally and globally, and simultaneously contribute to the challenges of the Australian DLT and the UN SDGS.

Part 8: High Performance Computing and BigData ; International audience ; The National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) at the Australian National University (ANU) has co-located a priority set of over 10 PetaBytes (PBytes) of national data collections within a HPC research facility. The facility provides an integrated high-performance computational and storage platform, or a High Performance Data (HPD) platform, to serve and analyse the massive amounts of data across the spectrum of environmental collections – in particular from the climate, environmental and geoscientific domains. The data is managed in concert with the government agencies, major academic research communities and collaborating overseas organisations. By co-locating the vast data collections with high performance computing environments and harmonising these large valuable data assets, new opportunities have arisen for Data-Intensive interdisciplinary science at scales and resolutions not hitherto possible.

This landmark event brought together data scientists, researchers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and data stewards from disciplines across the globe to explore how best to exploit the data revolution to improve science and society through data-driven discovery and innovation. IDW 2022 combined the 19th RDA Plenary Meeting, the biannual meeting of this international member organization working to develop and support global infrastructure facilitating data sharing and reuse, and SciDataCon 2022, the scientific conference addressing the frontiers of data in research organized by CODATA and WDS. ; International audience ; Profound changes in our world are exacerbating data availability challenges at the global level, in particular between scientists and other knowledge workers from regions separated by various features including historical, financial, cultural, political aspects, aside from time and space . Very few, if any, of our present problems such as biodiversity decline, climate change, and viral pandemics stop at national, disciplinary and linguistic boundaries, yet our most vital responses to the shared problems, the information generated to analyze and derive solutions, is still siloed in different languages and locations throughout the world. It is clear that in order for us to effectively respond, we need to collaborate globally and communicate information more effectively. Globalization of research requires interoperability of our observations and experimentation systems.The use of common FAIR vocabularies, that are both human and machine readable, is a key criterion in the FAIR principles (Principle I2 of Wilkinson et al 2016 specifies '(meta)data use vocabularies that follow FAIR principles'). Using common FAIR vocabularies will enable data interoperability and the necessary meta-analyses even when data have different origins and are based on multiple vocabularies.
