The purpose of the article is to place the confrontation between the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan and the People's Republic of China (PRC) during the period from 1951 to 1978 in a broader theoretical perspective of regional rivalry. It is shown that in a asymmetrical regional rivalry, the weaker state tends to be more sensitive and vulnerable to domestic disturbances and its relations with other nations. (DÜI-Sen)
