Positive action in favour of women in the provision of training has helped to identify the practices that discriminate against women and to counter their effects. In the past, the European Social Fund has supported training initiatives run by and for women. In the future, however, because of changes to the allocation of the Fund, women's training may not receive the same priority. This article examines women's training needs and argues that naming women as a priority in resource allocation encourages the development of local labour market strategies that address gender and, thereby, make visible the circumstances and needs of women.
