Bei seinen Überlegungen zur Highschool läßt sich der Autor von zwei Motiven leiten: einerseits die Suche nach einer weniger "mechanistischen", sondern eher symbolisch vermittelten Sicht auf soziale Beziehungen; zum anderen von dem Versuch, eine dynamischere Vorstellung von Gesellschaft zu entwickeln, die sich stärker an Veränderungen orientiert als an reproduktionstheoretischen Prämissen. Als Basiselemente sozialer Beziehungen arbeitet der Autor die Begriffe "Interaktion", "Gesellschaft" und "Selbst" heraus. Diese finden auch in den Schulen ihren (unterschiedlichen) Ausdruck; "allerdings nicht durch ihre Verwirklichung". Vielmehr wird das zunehmende Fehlen dieser Verhaltensweisen und ihrer Symbolisierungen festgestellt. Die verschiedenen Abwehrprozesse des Selbst, so faßt der Autor seine Überlegungen zusammen, die sich innerhalb von Institutionen bilden, in deren sozialer Praxis die Kernelemente sozialer Beziehungen verschwunden sind, zeigen besser, was eine postmoderne Gesellschaft praktisch bedeutet, als der theoretisch fragwürdige Diskurs über ein "dezentriertes" postmodernes Selbst: "Identitätsbildung ist geprägt von der Verteidigung gegen soziale Defizite, nicht davon, daß diese freudig begrüßt würden."
