Context Invasive species are a leading cause of extinctions, yet predicting their ecological impacts poses a formidable challenge for conservation biologists. When native predators are naïve to invaders, they may lack appropriate behaviours to deal with the invader. In northern Australia, the invasion of the highly toxic cane toad (Rhinella marina) has caused serious population declines of reptilian and mammalian predators that are ill equipped to deal with toad toxins. Cane toads recently invaded the Kimberley region of Western Australia, where they potentially threaten several species of small dasyurid predators. Aims We investigated whether red-cheeked dunnarts (Sminthopsis virginiae) attack cane toads, and if so, whether individuals subsequently learn to avoid toads as prey. Methods We quantified feeding and learning behaviours in toad-naïve red-cheeked dunnarts from the north Kimberley in Western Australia. Key results All toad-naïve dunnarts attacked toads during their first encounter. Most dunnarts bit the toad on the snout, killed it by biting the cranium, and consumed the toad snout-first, thereby initially avoiding the toad's parotoid glands. Most dunnarts partially consumed toads before discarding them, and only one animal showed visible signs of toad poisoning. All dunnarts rapidly learnt to avoid toads as prey after one or two encounters. Predators rejected toads as prey for the duration of the study (22 days), suggesting long-term retention of the knowledge that toads are noxious. Conclusions Our results show that red-cheeked dunnarts rapidly learn to avoid cane toads as prey. Implications Our study was limited by small sample sizes, but our results suggest that small dasyurids can adapt to the cane toad invasion via taste aversion learning.

We examined the impact of habitat degradation (removal of surface rocks) on an
endangered snake species (Hoplocephalus bungaroides,
Elapidae) at 23 sites in south-eastern Australia, by quantifying the impact of
rock removal on (i) the availability of suitable shelter-sites for the snakes
and their major prey species (the velvet gecko,
Oedura lesueurii), and (ii) the numbers of snakes and
geckos. Our survey showed that both the snakes and the geckos prefer rocks
lying on other rocks, rather than on soil, and select rocks of particular
sizes. The rocks removed by bush-rock collectors overlap considerably in size
(diameter and thickness) and substrate (rock on rock) with those used by
broad-headed snakes and velvet geckos. Multivariate path analysis suggests
that population densities of broad-headed snakes (as measured by capture
rates) may be determined primarily by gecko numbers, which in turn depend upon
availability of suitable rocks. In some sites, rock numbers were substantially
reduced by anthropogenic disturbance. Thus, our survey data suggest that
bush-rock removal has contributed to the endangerment of
H. bungaroides.

Abstract
In urban bushland, the installation of nest boxes is widely used to compensate for the loss of natural tree hollows. However, current nest box designs may not provide thermal refuges for wildlife during summer heatwaves, particularly if internal temperatures exceed the upper critical temperatures of wildlife. We investigated whether the addition of roofing insulation to nest boxes deployed for sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) and squirrel gliders (Petaurus norfolcensis) in urban bushland would reduce internal nest box temperatures during summer heatwaves. We measured temperatures of 44 insulated and 47 uninsulated nest boxes during one of the hottest summers on record (2018–2019) in the Lake Macquarie region of NSW, Australia, a period during which several prolonged heatwaves occurred. Over the 90-day study, maximum temperatures were, on average, 3.1°C lower in insulated boxes than in uninsulated boxes. The addition of insulation significantly lowered nest box temperatures regardless of aspect (north or south facing) or day of measurement. Temperatures exceeded the upper critical temperature (35.1°C) of gliders more frequently in uninsulated nest boxes (28% of days) than in insulated nest boxes (8% days). Although the addition of insulation to nest boxes lowered their internal temperatures, during heatwaves spanning 23 days, nest box temperatures exceeded the upper critical temperatures of gliders on 58% and 23% of days in uninsulated and insulated nest boxes respectively. These findings underscore the importance of retaining natural hollows in urban bushland to provide thermally suitable refuges for wildlife during extreme heat events.

Context Animals can be taught new behaviours to mitigate threatening processes. However, it is yet to be confirmed if such teaching can be deployed in the field. Here we test this possibility using the invasion of cane toads because they are highly toxic novel prey items to many predators across northern Australia. Aims Research has shown that training predators to avoid toads, using conditioned taste aversion (CTA), significantly improves the survival rates of individuals. We sought to determine if deployment of CTA baits, in situ, could reduce cane toad impacts on a mammalian predator, the northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus). Methods The work was conducted in the Kimberley, Western Australia, where we treated three quoll populations with training baits from November 2015–November 2017, and kept four populations as controls. We used camera traps and Bayesian hierarchal modelling to estimate the population size of quolls on up to four occasions before, and two occasions after, cane toad arrival. Key results We observed a 65% reduction in quoll population size at control sites and a 94% reduction at treatment sites: a significant effect of aversion training, but in the direction opposite to that expected. Conclusions Two complexities – decay of aversion, and individual variation – together, may explain our result. Our trials indicate that most animals are no longer averse within 120 days post-training. Earlier studies indicating that aversion training lasts longer may have inadvertently observed innate (i.e. genetically based) aversion to cane toads. Another possibility is that our dose rate of thiabendazole within the CTA baits was, in fact, too low; or the result may be an artefact of the non-random assignment of treatment and control groups. Ultimately, there is no way of determining exactly why our outcome occurred without further laboratory/captive trails. Regardless, our study demonstrates a failure of CTA training to mitigate the impact of cane toads on northern quolls in this system. Implications Our result calls into question the value of this approach for conserving quoll populations, at least in its current form. More generally, our results point to the often-unexpected complexities encountered as ideas progress from captive trials to field deployment.
