What did the past inherit to a place? It left a track of continuity that builds the identity of the place. This study aims to observed continuity aspect to develop heritage tourism in a historic corridor of Medan City. Using a mixed method of quantitative as well as qualitative, it focused on three indicators in the study area namely values, nostalgia, and familiarity. The findings have shown that the largest contribution in building the area identity came from the heritage buildings and historical stories while the familiarity was proven to be weak.

This paper attempts to portray the classification of Malaysian architecture according to the trends and changes along with the advancement of the economy, technology and growth of architecture schools in Malaysia. The faces of Malaysian architecture are very much influenced by graduates in architecture returning from overseas and the establishment of the Malaysian Institute of Architects. Malaysia is blessed with natural beauty and resources that enable it to be independent. The hot-wet equatorial climate of Malaysia and its high humidity together with the abundance of timber and other cheap building materials enable builders and architects alike to experiment with the built forms. The traditional and vernacular architecture that has been crystallized in the colonial style by the pioneer British architects who designed the government quarters and other government buildings in Malaysia revealed the attention towards the climatic factors and the style that later developed into modern and post-modern style that appear in the residential design of the Malaysian landscape today. This paper employs an exploratory technique from earlier writings and longitudinal historical evidences of Malaysian architecture, visual surveys from the digital media and verbal comments from the practising Architects interviewed. The finding shows that the Malaysian Architecture can be classified according to era, style and contemporary trends influenced by the changes in the world.

Spatial planning can improve one's quality of life by enhancing the environmental quality and its potential. Thus, the application of the concept of identity into the planning process is essential in emphasizing the significance of a place, especially in heritage tourism area, where tourist satisfaction is obtained from the tourism objects peculiarities that become the place identity. However, similar studies are still limited so that this study will contribute to filling the gaps. This study is conducted in Maimoon Palace District, a historic area in Medan. This study aims to examine the application of the concept of spatial planning based on the area identity. A qualitative method is used to collect the data about spatial planning elements in the area. The findings indicate that the existing spatial planning has already contained the place identity. However, many problems in spatial planning elements still cause a chaotic view of the area. Therefore, the government should improve the area not only by improving the physical quality but also increasing tourist satisfaction to enhance tourism attractiveness.
