THE MAIN CONCERN OF THIS ARTICLE IS THE PROBLEM OF HOW AN IMPORTANT FOREIGN POLICY ISSUE MAY AFFECT THE NATIONAL CONFLICT STRUCTURE OF A GIVEN SOCIETY. THE EEC ISSUE IN NORWEGIAN POLITICS HAS BEEN STUDIED AS SUCH A CASE. THIS ISSUE TRIGGERED OFF A VERY INTENSIUE POLITICAL DEBATE IN WHICH ALLIANCES FOR AND AGAINST THE EEC MEMBERSHIP CUT ACROSS THE NORMAL PATTERNS OF POLITICAL CONFLICT.
