The release of Jacob Zuma: a politicological analysis In this article it is argued that the dismissal of Deputy President Jacob Zuma on 14 June 2005 must be understood in the context of the tradition of cabinet responsibility to parliament. It shows how the English tradition of ministerial responsibility is also followed in South Africa. It is argued that President Mbeki affirmed the critical morality of the Constitution that a member of cabinet must sacrifice his/her office when serious charges are brought against such a cabinet member, even if the cabinet member has not had the chance to "have their day" in a court of law. The article argues furthermore that the founding values of the Constitution have not been respected by either Zuma or the National Executive Committee of the ANC by not insisting that Zuma also resigns as Deputy President of the ANC. Public accountability cannot only be required by the Constitution, but must also be respected by institutions of civil society. Mbeki made a strong and visionary decision to dismiss Zuma in June 2005, but the ANC as institution has failed the nation by declining to dismiss Zuma as Deputy President of the ANC – especially after Zuma's evidence in his trial for alleged rape.

Certified local economic developers are the cornerstone of municipalities that want to grow their economies and uplift the standard of living within communities in South Africa. Both internationally and in South Africa, there is growing awareness that economic development strategies are most effective when they are designed and implemented at a local level.

Knowledge transmission and generation belong to the core mission of the public university. In democratic South Africa, the transformation of these processes and practices in higher education has become an urgent and contested task. The Faculty of Theology at the University of the Free State has already done some original work on the implications of these for theology. One area of investigation that has not yet received due attention concerns the role of theological disciplines, and especially the relation between academic disciplines and societal dynamics. This research project addresses the challenge and this volume reflects the intellectual endeavour of lectures, research fellows and a post-graduate student associated with the faculty. Each theological discipline has its own history and has already experienced reconstruction, both globally and in South Africa. Some of these genealogical developments and re-envisioning are mapped by the contributions in this volume. The critical questions addressed are: what are the contours of the (post)apartheid condition and what are the implications for responsible disciplinary practices in theology? The chapters convey an impression of the vitality of theology at the University of the Free State and in South Africa and give expression to fundamental shifts that have taken place in theological disciplines, and also of future tasks. This research project aims to stimulate reflection on responsible and innovative disciplinary practices of theology in South Africa, which, we envisage, will contribute to social justice and human flourishing. -Rian Venter, University of the Free State

While there is extensive data on the experiences of women working in managerial positions in Britain, there is a dearth of such information in Hong Kong. Consequently much of our understanding and beliefs about these women's lives are based on issues that concern women in the West, such as subordination and the struggle for equal rights.

In our globalized era it has become impossible to deal effectively with constitutional law and related subjects such as fundamental rights, administrative law and political science without knowledge of foreign systems. A wealth of literature is available on practically all constitutional systems and the intricacies of their application. This, however, presents the constitutionalist with a formidable problem: Which foreign systems should I explore in order to make relevant comparisons, and how should I go about it? This book addresses the core problems of comparability and appropriate comparative methodology in the realm of contemporary constitutionalism. The outcome is, however, not mere theorizing. Most of the text is devoted to an incisive application of the chosen comparative method to four geographically, historically, and culturally divergent, but thoroughly comparable, constitutional systems. In the course of the comparative exercise, contemporary constitutional dogma and constitutional mechanics are analyzed and explained, in many instances in their historical contexts, making the book itself a useful source of comparative and historical information
