AbstractSince the last decades of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century, the use of metaphysics by philosophers when approaching conceptual problems in biology has increased. Some philosophers call this tendency in philosophy of biology 'Metaphysics of Biology' (Guay and Pradeu in Synthese 1–20, 2017). In this paper, I aim at characterizing Metaphysics of Biology by paying attention to the diverse ways philosophers use metaphysics when addressing conceptual problems in biology. I will claim that there are two different modes of doing Metaphysics of Biology, namely MetaphysicsforBiology and MetaphysicsinBiology.

ABSTRACT In order to extend the use of Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) to commercial applications, it is necessary to provide a mechanism to integrate this kind of networks into the Internet. In this way, MANETs could be utilized in visiting theme parks, commercial centers and military scenarios. The interconnection of MANETs and the Internet is supported by a Gateway. The gateway is responsible for informing about some configuration parameters as well as for enabling the creation of the routes to the Internet in the MANET nodes. For these tasks, several control messages are generated. The method in which these messages are originated defines the existing Integration Supports for MANETs. In particular, under the hybrid Global Connectivity support, the Gateway generates periodic Modified Router Advertisements (MRA) which are broadcast in an area close to the Gateway. The optimum values to define the periodicity of these messages and the diameter (number of hops) of the area in which they are propagated depend on the network conditions. Therefore, an automatic and dynamic algorithm is recommended to be implemented in the Gateway to adjust these two parameters. In this sense, this paper presents a technique by which the interval of emission of the MRA messages is controlled by a fuzzy system. The fuzzy system captures several network conditions such as the link stability or the number of sources. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms other adaptive approaches for the gateway discovery in MANETs. Afro-descendant communities, especially ethnically differentiated women, have been victims of the historical neglect of the Colombian State. They have suffered the systematic violation of their fundamental rights due to social inequality, discrimination and the violence caused by the Colombian armed conflict. The objective of this article is to analyze, through a qualitative methodology, the organizational experience and collective actions for peace taken by the Association of Afro-descendant Women from Yolombó (ASOMUAFROYO), North Cauca. An intersectional perspective based on the categories of race/ethnicity, gender, and class as key points that structure peacebuilding initiatives is adopted. As a result, it was found that the definition of peace is linked to territory and ancestry, and that collective actions focus on meeting the needs of the community and make up for the historical shortcomings of the Colombian state in their territory.
AbstractFrom the beginning of the practice of surrogate pregnancy, ethical approaches to it have included several dimensions. Central issues such as surrogates' genuine autonomy, the risk of exploitation of people in vulnerable situations, or the legitimacy of the commercialization of the body have kept this debate alive for more than three decades. Among all the conflicts, those related to healthcare professionals involved in the surrogacy process have been less frequently addressed. Which patient(s) should they protect? Whose interests should they preserve, the surrogate mother's or the intended parents'? Are there differences in healthcare provision between regular pregnant women and those who are going to relinquish their babies? Is adequate compliance with the ethical standards of the caregiver–patient relationship possible? In this article, I will address these questions to identify interests and practices at stake in the healthcare context, where an important part of the surrogacy process occurs.
