The paper examines opinions of mainland Chinese students on the issue of relations between Taiwan (Republic of China) and the mainland (People's Republic of China). It analyses the students' expectations of future relations between Taiwan and the mainland at three different time points: 10 years, 30 years and 50 years from now. (DÜI-Sen)

This paper examines variables influencing the regional variations of life expectancy at birth in Taiwan. It is argued that rapid industrialization has been accompanied by negative factors which produced unexpected environmental pollution in Taiwan. We present an analysis focusing on the relationship between industrial pollution and regional variations of life expectancy at birth. The total nmber of factories is adopted as an indirect measure of industrial pollution. The 361 local areal units under study include precincts and urban and rural townships across the island. Findings support the hypothesis that there is a negative and significant relationship between total number of factories and the level of life expectancy at birth, after controlling other independent variables.

The formation, preliminary results and problems of the PRC's unique one-child family policy are discussed. According to the author, the Peking leadership seems not to be concerned about the possible demographic, social, economic and psychological effects of their proclaimed nationwide one-child family policy. It is argued that the potential effects of this policy might be very strong. The PRC's family planning programme compared with that of Taiwan. (DÜI-Sen)

In order to examine issues related to the population age structure, especially population aging on the Chinese mainland, the authors present population trends over the past 35-years and population projections by age and sex for the years 1982-2052. They discuss a few policy options that could be adopted to deal with problems of population aging under the current socialist system. (DÜI-Sen)
