Adopting a qualitative methodology, this exploratory study examined the construct of trust and its factors of trustworthiness as perceived in a Confucian-influenced society. The findings of our study indicated that there are emic differences in the meaning of trust as perceived in a Confucian-influenced setting. Specifically, we found a heavy reliance on affective factors of trustworthiness in the decision to trust. In addition, we found a number of factors unique to the context that facilitates the development of trust: diligence, perseverance, filial piety, thriftiness, respect for authority, a shared value of collective effort, harmonious relationship in the office, humbleness and magnanimous behavior. Implications are drawn and future research directions suggested.

This study provides an extension to the Charismatic Leadership theories by delineating the roles of rhetoric content: in frame alignment and trust building. Propositions were developed from past literature on the rhetorical behaviors of Charismatic Leadership and the interpersonal trust literature. An empirical study was then conducted to test the propositions developed and it was found that Mr. Lee Kuan Yew use the Singapore National Day Rally speeches in limited ways to align frames and build trust.

Adopting a cross-cultural perspective, this study provides insights into how Chinese multinational corporations (MNCs) with a focus on Confucian values, builds trust and contributes to the globalization process in African settings, specifically Guinea. Using a mixed-methods methodology, we explore the dynamics of trust relationships within and across cultures. In Study 1, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 Chinese supervisors, 20 Guinean supervisors and 19 Guinean workers. We found Chinese expatriates to emphasize ability and integrity in trust building while Guinean workers care more about benevolence. Drawing on the insights of study 1, we proposed a model of interpersonal trust within and across cultures. In this Study 2, data was collected from 182 Guinean workers and their direct Chinese/Guinean supervisors. We found Guinean subordinates' trust in the organization to mediate between their trust in Guinean supervisors and their performance. In addition, Guinean supervisor's trust in Chinese supervisor positively affects Guinean subordinate's trust in organization and also moderates the positive relationship between Guinean subordinates' trust in the organization and their performance. We draw implications for management relationships between two cultures that are seemingly different from both studies.

This paper reports findings from a content analysis of newspaper articles to uncover the rhetorical visions of men and women managers portrayed by the media in Singapore and unfold the inherent conflicting forces that women managers face. The study revealed that the women manager vision that was portrayed by the press, emphasized the dilemmas and role conflicts that the women managers face; whereas for the men manager vision, the emphasis was their managerial abilities. The study also uncovered that the success of the women managers had to rely on a support system that consisted of a male mentor, a supportive husband, a mother or maid to help in the housechores; whereas the success of the men managers depended wholly on themselves. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Data obtained with a questionnaire instrument from managerial employees (N = 200) in Singapore were used to examine some antecedents of subjective career success. The choice of antecedents was informed by recent calls to place research on career issues in the context of an individual's life roles. Confirmatory factor analysis (LISREL VII) was used to examine the one-factor and three-factor models hypothesized to underlie the subjective career success data. The results revealed a three-factor model to have adequate fit statistics - financial and hierarchical success, and career satisfaction. The antecedent sets of human capital, work values, family and structural or work variables accounted for over 40% of the explained variance in each career success dimension. While the career success dimensions were influenced by different variables, individual-organizational value congruity, quality of parental role and internal labor market emerged as consistent antecedents of the career success dimensions. The pattern of significant antecedents of the career success dimensions was interpreted as providing support for the approach that underpinned the study. The limitations of the study, and practical and theoretical implications of the findings are discussed.
