A historical analysis of the impacts of technology, production, & consumption on both the environment & the human condition. Brief sketches of Fordism & Japanese forms of production are given, & four direct causes of environmental destruction are identified: technology, production expansion, population growth, & consumption. Sociology's failure to adequately address environmental issues is discussed, & the state-economy complex in the culture of modernity is explored. It is argued that the tools of sociological analysis should be redirected so as to gain a better understanding of the dual problems of environmental destruction & its control. 1 Table, 1 Figure, 1 Photograph, 32 References.
