Compares demographic trends among ethnic Hungarians in Croatia & Slovenia. Most ethnic Hungarians in Crotia reside along the northeastern tip of the territory, as do most in Slovenia. But that is where the similarities end, since ethnic Hungarians in Croatia are threatened by extinction, while, in Slovenia, they are protected by broad & stable laws that guarantee minority rights. In Croatia, they live in scattered communities that lack the necessary institutions for communal survival. In contrast, all minority communities in Slovenia are guaranteed linguistic equality; educational, informational, & cultural products in their mother tongue; relationships with their mother country; unrestricted use of nationality symbols; & cultural & educational self-government.
