Within nearly every production process there are two crucial targets. On the one hand, improvement of product quality and increase of process efficiency, on the other hand optimization of cost efficiency and savings in running costs. In this paper a process step where both targets could be influenced is discussed, namely thick juice filtration, which is an essential step during the sugar manufacture.

Four different technologies are reviewed and compared with each other in detail. Three of them are already established in filtration of thick juice, while the fourth one is quite new and, in various aspects, a promising alternative.
