In: Guerres mondiales et conflits contemporains, Band 260, Heft 4, S. 93-114
East German Military Aid to the Sandinista Government of Nicaragua, 1979–1990
In: Journal of Cold War studies, Band 16, Heft 2, S. 56-76
ISSN: 1531-3298
The East German regime provided extensive military assistance to developing countries and armed guerrilla movements in Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. In the 1980s, the pro-Soviet Marxist government in Nicaragua was one of the major recipients of East German military assistance. This article focuses on contacts at the level of the ministries of defense, on Nicaraguan requests to the East German military command, and on political and military decision-making processes in East Germany. The article examines the provision of weaponry and training as well as other forms of cooperation and support. Research for the article was conducted in the formerly closed archives of the East German Ministry for National Defense regarding military supplies to the Third World as well as the voluminous declassified files of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (the ruling Communist party).

Fighting the Cold War in southern Africa? East German military support to FRELIMO
In: Portuguese journal of social science, Band 9, Heft 2, S. 151-164
ISSN: 1758-9509
This article focuses on the military assistance provided by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) to the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO Frente de Libertao de Moambique), first during their struggle against the Portuguese colonial power and later during the war against the Mozambican
National Resistance Movement (Resistncia Nacional Moambicana) rebels. To date, the GDR's military commitment in southern Africa has been the topic of often unfounded speculation. The systemic secrecy of the GDR military made it easy for rumours to spread. This article seeks to contribute to
an academic reappraisal of this secret part of the GDR's history. It provides well-founded academic information based on original GDR documents that have been analysed for the first time. For 20 years the GDR's military provided solidarity assistance. East Berlin supplied weapons and military
equipment and also medical relief goods and food. Instead of sending troops or instructors to Mozambique, the GDR's army-trained Mozambican military personnel at schools in the GDR.
