After describing the family in the Philippines, the impact of urbanization & industrialization is explored, drawing on national statistics & survey data from the early 1990s. The age of marriage has risen, a consequence of the expanding role of women in the labor force. Families are becoming more nuclear & many are under stress. Many families have sent members overseas as contract laborers, causing separation. Young children are working long hours for low wages under poor working conditions. A growing liberalism toward premarital sex challenges the family's traditional function as a social institution that helps regulate sexual behavior. It is concluded, however, that the Filipino family will prevail if nurtured. 28 References. Adapted from the source document.

Student drinking patterns were examined before and after legislative action raising the minimum drinking age for 3.2 beer. Sampling was done at Oklahoma State University with three samples of 185, 276 and 245. The total quantity-frequency of drinking and the problem drinking index remained essentially the same after the law change, although some differences in drinking patterns were noted. Few changes were observed among men, but women reduced drinking in the sample immediately following the legislation, although they increased drinking by the end of the sampling period (six months later). After the law change, students tended to drink less often in bars, but more often at home and in other less public places; and they reported drinking significantly less beer, but more wine and liquor. The possibility was discussed that culturally relevant behavior, such as alcohol consumption, may require efforts to produce changes which are broader in scope than just changing laws.

Uniform, highly porous, columnar thin films incorporating YSZ and NiO prepared by magnetron sputtering with deposition at glancing incidence exhibited stoichiometries close to that of the Y–Zr–Ni sputter target. Characterization by means of SEM, XRD, XPS and RBS revealed that the uniformly distributed nickel component in the as-deposited films consisted of NiO, and that the YSZ component was essentially amorphous. Annealing such films at 850 °C in hydrogen resulted in crystallization of the YSZ phase with preservation of the columnar morphology, while the NiO underwent reduction to metallic Ni, which partially segregated to the film surface. The hydrogen-annealed thin film anodes exhibited high conductivity, comparable to that of conventionally-prepared anodes, in both hydrogen and hydrogen/water mixtures at temperatures relevant to SOFC operation. They were also robust against strain-induced separation from the substrate under limited thermal cycling in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres and are promising candidates for use as anodes in their own right and as strain-accommodating buffer layers between conventional anodes and the electrolyte for use in SOFC applications. ; European Union FP7/2007-2013 ; Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Technology Initiative 298300 ; Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad MAT2013-40852R

Source at https://doi.org/10.2903/j.efsa.2018.5132 . ; The European Commission asked EFSA for a scientific opinion on chronic wasting disease in two parts. Part one, on surveillance, animal health risk‐based measures and public health risks, was published in January 2017. This opinion (part two) addresses the remaining Terms of Reference, namely, 'are the conclusions and recommendations in the EFSA opinion of June 2004 on diagnostic methods for chronic wasting disease still valid? If not, an update should be provided', and 'update the conclusions of the 2010 EFSA opinion on the results of the European Union survey on chronic wasting disease in cervids, as regards its occurrence in the cervid population in the European Union'. Data on the performance of authorised rapid tests in North America are not comprehensive, and are more limited than those available for the tests approved for statutory transmissible spongiform encephalopathies surveillance applications in cattle and sheep. There are no data directly comparing available rapid test performances in cervids. The experience in Norway shows that the Bio‐Rad TeSeE™ SAP test, immunohistochemistry and western blotting have detected reindeer, moose and red deer cases. It was shown that testing both brainstem and lymphoid tissue from each animal increases the surveillance sensitivity. Shortcomings in the previous EU survey limited the reliability of inferences that could be made about the potential disease occurrence in Europe. Subsequently, testing activity in Europe was low, until the detection of the disease in Norway, triggering substantial testing efforts in that country. Available data neither support nor refute the conclusion that chronic wasting disease does not occur widely in the EU and do not preclude the possibility that the disease was present in Europe before the survey was conducted. It appears plausible that chronic wasting disease could have become established in Norway more than a decade ago.
