The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and the Department of Agriculture (DOA) organized the National Inception Workshop of the project Agricultural Transformation and Market Integration in the ASEAN Region: Responding to Food Security and Inclusiveness Concerns on 22-23 June 2017. More than 40 experts from international organizations, government agencies, academic institutions, civil society and private sector from Lao PDR, the Philippines, India and the United States of America took part in the discourse on global, regional and national perspectives on agricultural transformation and market integration in the ASEAN region vis-à-vis the Lao PDR economy. The Lao PDR National Inception Workshop had the following objectives: (1) to gain good understanding of the structural transformation and market integration and their implications for agricultural growth and food security in Lao PDR, the position/role of small farmers in ATMI, and the various initiatives to address food security and inclusiveness concerns in Lao PDR; (2) to consult various stakeholders – AMS, civil society organizations (CSOs)/farmers' organizations (FOs), the private sector, and research institutions on the implementation of the research project on ATMI; (3) to identify priority promising commodities for regional and global value chains; and (4) to develop Country Action Plan towards the achievement of the project's target outcomes which are enhanced capacity of AMS to identify and design national strategies, policies, programs and national agri-food value chain investment initiatives that benefit small-scale rural producers (SSRPs). ; Non-PR ; IFPRI2; Agricultural Transformation and Market Integration (ATMI) ; SAR

Experts from international organizations, government agencies, academic institutions, civil society and private sector representing Myanmar, the Philippines, Italy, India and the United States of America took part in the discourse on global, regional and national perspectives on agricultural transformation and market integration in the ASEAN region. Several experts from international organizations, government agencies, academic institutions, civil society and private sector representing Cambodia, the Philippines, India, the United States of America and Italy took part in the discourse on global, regional and national perspectives on agricultural transformation and market integration in the ASEAN region. The workshop was held on 27-28 April 2017 in Hanoi, Vietnam. More than 60 experts from international organizations, government agencies, academic institutions, civil society and private sector from Vietnam, the Philippines, India, the United States of America and Italy took part in the discourse on global, regional and national perspectives on agricultural transformation and market integration in the ASEAN region vis-à-vis the Vietnam economy. In preparation for the Training-Workshop on Rapid Value Chain Assessment, the Focal Points & Researchers Meeting was held in the afternoon of 31 October 2017, presided by Dr. Bessie M. Burgos, Program Head for Research and Development of SEARCA. The main objectives of the meeting were to discuss the updates about the project, and to finalize each country's priority commodity for the national level policy studies (Attachment A). The rationale of the training-workshop and its corresponding expected outputs were likewise discussed during the meeting, while the project deliverables and budget were further clarified. The International Food Policy Research Institure (IFPRI) and the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), concluded the final leg in a series of five inception workshops under the Agricultural Transformation and Market Integration in the ASEAN Region: Responding to Food Security and Inclusiveness Concerns (ATMI-ASEAN) Programme on 10-11 August 2017 at the SEARCA Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. The two-day inception workshop focused on developing the Philippine Action Plan toward achieving the programme's target outcomes. Country-level inception workshops have been conducted in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Vietnam. The workshop aimed for participants to 1) Gain good understanding of structural transformation and market integration as these relate to agricultural growth and food security in the Philippines; (2) Level-off on what the project hopes to achieve and on the roles of various stakeholders; (3) Identify promising commodities for regional and global value chains; and (4) Develop a Country Action Plan towards the achievement of the Programme' target outcome, i.e., enhanced capacity of ASEAN member-states (AMS) to identify and design national strategies, policies, programs and national agri-food value chain investment initiatives that benefit small-scale rural producers (SSRPs). ; Non-PR ; IFPRI2; Agricultural Transformation and Market Integration (ATMI) ; SAR
